A question for any TV Tropers · 8:44am Aug 10th, 2012

So, I was messing around with Fimfiction after noticing the stats button on the Discordant page, and I found you can see where people are viewing your story from. To my surprise, 6 people came from TV Tropes. So I followed the link and found a big list of recommended fanfics (Thank you whoever put Discordant up). What really surprised me is some of those fanfics had there own TV Tropes page. My question to any people who know more about how TV Tropes works: Is it common for Fanfics to have there own page? Do they have to be really well know fanfics, like Past Sins or Fallout Equestria? And if not, what do you need to do to get a page approved? I'm done writing Discordant and ready to move on to something new, but I have to admit seeing it on TV tropes would be cool.

I too am curious about TV Tropes

To answer your question: highly recommended fanfics go on the Fanfic Recommendations page(s). Obviously, "Discordant" is on there. The fics that have their own page are the ones that are well-known. This isn't to say the lesser known ones that are on the generic rec pages but lack their own page aren't as good, simply that not as many had a chance to read them. Each "dedicated" page is the result of several tropers adding examples to the page on their own initiative. It would be very difficult for a single troper to have created the "Fallout Equestria" page. Thus, the most popular of the stories have their own pages because more tropers have read them, and thus more tropers can contribute to the creation of said page. Less well-known stories have less tropers to help create a page. That's kind of the point of the Fanfic Recommendations page, to make more tropers aware. Some troper found a fantastic story, and wanted to spread the news. So while the "dedicated" pages are places were tropers geek out and analyze the story, the Fanfic Recommendations page is where tropers advertise stories and help generate a reader base.

It's not common, per say, but it's difficult to see a medium-sized and up fandom that doesn't have at least one fanfic with their own page. So feel free to make a Discordant page; I'm sure a lot of people would be interested in one, and it might drum up support. If all else fails, link to it here; I'm sure some people would love to help you expand it.

Or just wait for someone to do it by themselves; that's how most of those pages got started.

It's not difficult. Tvtropes has a 'no such thing as notability' policy; if the work exists, it merits a page by definition. If you make a Discordant page, all you need to do is link it to the MLP fanfics index and it's good to go. There is no 'approval' needed.

WHAT? YOUR DONE WRITING DISCORDANT? Okay, I'm going to check this out!

It does generally have to be pretty famous, but there's nothing stopping you from setting up a page for Discordant if you want. There's no rule against it, and the story certainly deserves a page.
