I don't blog often, but when I do... · 7:12am Oct 8th, 2015
It's probably because I don't have anyone else who can relate to. I'm not outwardly a brony in the fanatical sense. I don't create content, I don't write or draw, sing or compose music. I do cook, and I do try to make MLP themed foods now and again however. I would say that I'm more a casual in this fandom. Yet when I'm with other brony types or at a convention, or even just with people who've seen the show, I'll totally get into it and just rant about episodes and head canon ideas for hours.
So the issue? At my restaurant I'm the executive chef, the bossman, and the one who directs the whole damn show. Out of my 12 man crew (I used to have a female chef as well but she moved on) only one of them was a brony like myself, and that guy has also been my best friend for over seventeen years now. I recently hired a new Sous Chef, my possible second in command, and I'm pretty sure he's into the show as well due to several accidental slips on his part, such as seeing the app icon for EqD on his phone once.
Despite knowing that, I just can't bring myself to talk about it around him, I can't even hint at it. I just find it strange that in a setting where it is most rare to find another brony, is also the only place I feel awkward talking about it. So is feeling awkward talking about MLP to another co-worker strange? Should I? I also worry about the whole "Familiarity breeds contempt" ideal as well. I'm sure that if I opened up about MLP to this guy it'd be pretty cool at first, but I don't know... Any thoughts from anyone on this?
I know that feeling as I'm a closet brony. But I think you should be comfortable and willing to open up about it
*Cough* ask? *cough*
Well, in my considered opinion, I would have to say withholding the whole "Brony Thing" to be generally a good idea, the main question should be: Does this person fill the position appropriately and in a businesslike manner? If the answer is "Yes" then it should stop there, sure, you can be friendly towards your employees, but my suggestion is to keep the atmosphere businesslike.
EqD, MLP, and so fourth, do not really pertain to the job at hand.
To me, it sounds like you have a good head on your shoulders and are doing well.
I largely agree with Poetry Motion. I myself wear my brony-ness with pride, but I still withhold the fact that I am a brony from certain people. My coworkers don't know. But I think if he starts talking about it as well, you should be okay.
