Nitpecking: Friendship Games · 1:18pm Sep 29th, 2015
The movie has its problems.
The villains are under developped, forgettable, one dimensional jerks and I just don't see the point in them.
I was hoping to see One-on-One competitions between the Wondercolts and the Shadow Bolts, with characters from the show, like Rainbow vs Lightning Dust (I know that she wasn't in the trailer, but come on. Indigo Zap is a re-colored human Lightning Dust), Rarity vs Suri, Pinkie vs Cheese Sandwhich (he wasn't in the trailer either), Fluttershy vs Coco Pommel, etc. And Sombra being the principle. That way, you can pander to the fans by finally revealing the characters' EQG counterpart AND it would have a point.
I feel like this movie should have focused more on ONE story, rather than jumping from one story-line to the other. Either human Twilight's quest to understand magic OR the Friendship Games. When I think about one of the story-lines, all I can think is: "Was that other story necessary?"
The climax of the movie, I find, is extremely rushed.
I don't like the songs, but that is just my opinion.
And Flash doesn't even give us a reason to hate him in this one, so he's even more useless than in the other two movies.
But there are good things:
The Shadow Bolts have a pretty interesting concept behind them. They are the Elements, but in a bad way.
Sugar Coat is brutally honest.
Sour Sweet is first kind to you and then stabs you in the back.
Lemon Zest wants others to listen to her mixtape, because she thinks they'll like it, but doesn't know when she oversteps boundries.
Indigo Zap is one of those people who go into Berserker mode when someone talks bad about her favourite football team.
But I can't even remember what Rarity's counterpart looks like, what she does or eve, what her name is.
Unfortunately, that is never talked about in th movie. They're the complete same at the end of the movie. It may have been a pretty good movie, if they focused on that.
The animation is even better than Rainbow Rocks.
The fact that they actually TRY to research and explain magic in their world. But it's done very poorly.
The Rainbooms transforming by living up to their pony versions element. That's a cool idea. But there it is pretty difficult to say when that level of Element is reached to transform.
Sunset Shimmer got more character development.
The climax, while rushed, is still pretty entertaining.
I used to think that the first one was worse, but after more thinking, Equestria Girls was objectively a good movie for most of the time. I just find it pretty boring. But this movie disappointed me very much. Yes, I think I'd rather watch the first one again, than this one. In fact, if I see this as an episode, it would make #3 on my personal worst episodes list.
Fuck this movie.
