When an Episdoe Kinda Sorta Messes up the Canon of your Story · 7:47pm Sep 13th, 2015
I liked the last episode. It also sort of contradicts some of what I wrote in the last chapter. And the next episode is going to feature a lot of Rarity and Rainbow Dash which I'm sure will tweak the canon of my story even further.
I don't really care much about timelines in my stories or others, I mean the show itself exist across a somewhat nebulous time frame for pete's sake. I think unless your are referencing a major event: Twilight becomes a Princess, Tirek destroys the Library etc, it's easier to just say your fic takes place sometime after Twilight moves to Ponyville and not worry so much about needing to reference or explicitly deny certain events.
But just in case people are a stickler for that sort of thing, let the word go forth from this time and place that the official word from the author is that Three Gems and a Scooter takes place after the end of season 4 and before the premier of season 5.
I've made progress on the next chapter but I have also been distracted by a one shot in case anyone is going to ask when the next chapter is coming out.
Happy New Year to my Jewish readers out there.
Eh, I hope you don't try to retcon the story to fit with canon. Definitely in the top ten of the "Worst thing authors of fan fiction can do".
3390379 Agreed.
I only retcon my own stuff. it's fun trying to write myself out of a corner and end up with like a bajillion more story words just to make it good. That's how the last 20k words of one of my stories happened.
A good rule of thumb is to ignore canon events that take place after you split the story off from canon. You can try to incorporate canon but it will be difficult. And sometimes you would just have to ignore things.
And 3390379 is right, seen too many fics make that mistake.
I think any episode past season two kind of sort of messes up the canon of anyone's story that was on this site. People got over it quite easily and if they didn't, they don't get the fun of Fanfiction.
