Starlight Glimmer: Origin Theories · 10:34am Aug 16th, 2015

All great villains truly believe that they're doing the right thing.

The very best villains are ones you can sympathize with at some point in the story.

So I hope DHX explores, either before or during the finale, Starlight Glimmer's origins, and why she's dead set against one of the most integral parts of Equestrian society: the Cutie Mark.

Personally, I hope it is because she was bullied relentlessly; either over her lack of a mark, or what it ended up being. Like a CMC with no other blanks to lean on, or a "Bad Seed" Babs that just got worse and worse over the years.

I hope the show does that, or something similar. It would make Diamond Tiara, and Silver Spoon to a lesser extent, even bigger assholes, and would show just how utterly destructive bullying can be.

Also, if in the end, there is any redemption, it would have to be like Moondancer's breakdown tenfold.

I really enjoy her since she is finally a major villain without being a god or an overpowered being, plus she has beaten the mane six ( like the Dazzlings ).

I also hope DHX does something about her past and plans something big for her revenge on the final. She sees something in Twiligt, she, like Sunset and Twilight has a magic cutie mark. I think she probably misunderstood it and maybe got kicked out by the school for gifted unicorns or even been the student to Celestia. I would love to see that it was an accident in the first place ( like she removed her best friend's cutie mark or something like that without knowing how to get it back ( without vault to store it, it flew away) )
It could be true since Celestia hadn't found usefull to tell Twilight that she wasn't the only one student she had or even tell her about those powerful being from a thousand years ago that keeps coming back :trollestia:

If she escaped again and this carried on into Season 6.

Yay best villain ever :yay:

She could be what sweetie would be without friends and Starlight is slightly less evil :) ( no cutie mark, late bloomer... )

3323394 I assume she didn't tell Twilight that there were other students cause it might've been obvious to her. I mean Princess Celestia is the head of the school for gifted unicorns right? That makes her a teacher or principal in addition to being a ruler of a nation. She even said to Spike she was a teacher while they were on an adventure together to get crystal lens for a new telescope for Twilight's birthday in the comics. And teachers always have many students so it kinda makes sense when you think about it.

I agree with this. I'm writing my own theories and they follow what you say. I see her as self-taught when it comes to magic. I can see her teenage years (as I believe she is older than the main 6 ) being spent in books and universities. That's probably where she acquired her first followers of equality.

I also think that her parents weren't all there or that their cutie marks kept them poor. So at a young age she blamed her parents' marks as the reason for her unhappiness.

To be real honest, I view her origins to be no different from the origin stories of cult leaders. She holds the mindset of a cult leader in many ways as seen through her behavior and her words.

1. Environment control- "Nopony has ever come to our village and ever wanted to leave!"
2. Mystical manipulation- IN the song "In our town", they have actual lines saying, "Join in our Uotpia, come out of the dark"
3. DEMAND for Purity- When Starlight guilted Party and made him feel bad for helping the Mane Six, claiming that he, "had complete disregard for his friends and how they'd feel. Such selfishness."
4. Cult of Confession- After being punished, Party admits that he never wanted to leave the village, even though his behavior said otherwise.
5. Sacred Science- "A pony with a different cutie mark in our midst would destroy our entire philosophy!:
6. Loaded language- After the Mane Six have shown themselves to be angry and upset over the loss of their cutie marks, Starlight says, "This is a perfectly NORMAL part of the equalization process."
7. Doctrine of person/pony- When confronted about lying to the village and stealing their cutie marks, Starlight shouts out, "I gave these ponies friendships they never could have had!" She was so invested in her own cause that she didn't care how much it hurt others.
8. Dispensing of existence- When Party joined the Mane Six and Fluttershy was let out, he exclaimed, "Your friend has accepted our way! You'll all accept our way! It's only a matter of time!" all while still being clearly distressed by his own words.

Starlight might very well be insane and think of herself as a GOD for her ability to steal ponies' cutie marks, just like many cult leaders have in the past. This causes me to wonder just how long this cult has been around and if it hadn't be discovered, there might have been a chance for children to be born in this cult. How legitimately terrifying would that be? Having to hide your mark from your parents and friends, only for it be revealed one day... Only to be stolen away, as well as the individuality and innocence that only a child can possess.

That is a fucking terrifying thought.

Once you look into the behavior of cults and apply it to here, it makes Starlight seem like one of the most dangerous ponies in the series. Yes, Nightmare was going to plunge Equestria into eternal darkness, but she only did that for a few minutes at best before being defeated; Chrysalis was just trying to feed her Changelings, but again, she also failed; King Sombra was corrupted by dark magic and thus he was an incoherent babbling buffoon who had five lines that was laced with growling and hissing(though I still love him to death); and Discord, lovable Discord, is now a reformed prankster.

Starlight, however? She has convinced an entire group of ponies that her way is correct by using her charismatic nature and loaded rhetoric, then proceeded to rip off an a literal part of a pony, all while keeping her own for the sake of keeping a dominant stance over these ponies. She has no remorse for her actions, meaning she might have sociopathic tendencies, and with the way she has no hesitation with manipulating these ponies' emotions, she might very well be a fucking psycho.

3324303 You know what else is terrifying? SG literally ripped off the one thing that marks a pony's maturity. Sounds to me like the equivalent of castration.
