Since the first time I watched Hercules, she has been my idol and rolemodel!
She's just so awesome, I love how she is sassy, quirky and sarcastic but still caring and doesn't take shit from anyone! And she's so pretty and funny! I wanna be like her!
...I actually just got a good idea for a story

Megara ftw! She was such a refreshing change of pace from most of the others that had come before her. She, Mulan, and Kida from Atlantis the Lost Empire are the more distinct and likeable of the Disney Princesses in my opinion.

I love Mulan; she's one of my favourite Disney characters — but I can't in all good conscience consider her to be a princess, even though Disney inexplicably includes her and Pocahontas in the line-up. (They used to include Tinker Bell too.)

Kida is very underrated, though she's also kinda scary when she goes super-saiyan. I prefer Rapunzel, who manages to be bad-ass without compromising her adorableness. (Merida fits into this category too.)

I'd also like to nominate Princess Eilonwy (from The Black Cauldron) as an underrated Disney princess.

That is one of the best things Disney did, actually give her a personality, I remember the old movies where she just was a character and that was it.

In terms of the cartoons, Cinderella is awful — the whole romance with Prince Charming who has even more of a cardboard cut-out personality than Flash Sentry. The recent live action film was far better, giving him some decent characterization, and letting them spend a bit of time together instead of doing the whole true-love-at-first-sight thing.

Snow White and Sleeping Beauty are pretty much the same. Ariel is perhaps even worse, giving up her home, family, and voice for a man she's barely met. Though she's such a smexy mermaid, I forgive her. Jasmine is treated as little more than a prize for Aladdin.

Belle is intelligent and has a bit of sass at least.

Really the 21st century Disney princesses have much more rounded and admirable characters — Tiana, Rapunzel, Merida, Anna, and Elsa. (And of course Star Butterfly .)

Sorry to ramble. Outside of ponies, Disney Princesses and Disney Fairies are my thing. (And inside of ponies, it's too dark to read.)

I think Disney is well aware she's not a princess, but that is also the message. "You don't have to be a princess to feel like one."

That sounds like an excuse that was made up after the decision had already been made to include her. There's no suggestion in Mulan that she ever "feels like a princess" in the film. If anything, that's the sort of life that she's trying to rebel against — that of a trophy woman.
