Character Selection? How does it work? · 2:04am Jul 24th, 2012

Blog Number 4: Midsummer Night Edition

I have an idle question. Well, OK, three:

1. On the character selection, there's one for Diamond Dogs (presumably as a species), one for the Wonderbolts (as opposed to individual 'Bolts like Soarin' and Spitfire), and one for Queen Chrysalis. Yet, there isn't one for Changelings (as a species). A Changelings option would make sense to me as I've seen changeling fics without Chrysalis as the focus (perhaps there are some without her at all)? There also aren't ones for other species, like griffons and dragons, and there have been fics about them. Do you think there should be more species options like this?

2. What does the "other" option represent; other canon characters, or characters from another continuity? I've avoided using this option with my fics in case of confusion. For instance, Through the Eyes of the Hurricane was about Hurricane and Pansy, so I originally selected "Other" before I had to admit I wasn't sure what it was for and decided to drop it.

3. Could anyone tell me how character options for the selection are decided? I know there's a shipload of characters for this show and the site'd probably crash if too many were included, but I wonder how the moderators did decide e.g. to add Thunderlane, Rumble, and Flitter and Cloudchaser.

If anyone passing by could answer these questions or direct me to a blog that does, I'd be grateful. Thanking you in advance!

In other news, I'm still reading fic stories as usual. The recent increase of favourites on my page (99 total favourites at present) are mostly long fics I've just started reading. I like all the fics once I've read them (or unfavourite them, depending on quality and on how enjoyable it is). Cheer On and The Ballad of Echo the Diamond Dog are really great reads at present. I also recommend The Carnivore's Prayer, even though it's a little darker than the stuff I usually read. Maybe you like dark, though, so there it is.

New Stories?: Good news; I have one coming up! It'll be another Daring Do one-shot, so I've checkmarked Dare To Be Awesome in case those who liked that one of mine will like this one. I'm sure I could come up with a longer story for that adventurous mare sooner or later. I really liked Whip and Wing, and I've recently had a revival of interest in Indiana Jones (I enjoy those films so much), so I've plenty of inspiration.

Story Count: This new story will up my count from 10 to 11. About time, too.

A word of optimism for those struggling to write: Remember, sports fans; if you write a mere 1,000 words a day for an entire year, you'd write 365,000 words. That's more than enough for a few decent-sized fics, so even a little now could become a lot later if you keep it up. Don't push yourself, though - remember, you're a human being with limits and the need to rest, so be gentle on yourself. And as Cherry Jubilee said, don't forget the most important thing; "Have Fun!"

That's all for now, I think. Impossible Numbers, out.

As far as I know, other is just literally for any character that cannot be classed under any of the other tags.

So Panzy and Hurricaine would be "other", so would any changeling (unless specifically not one of the ones involved in the Canterlot Wedding, that would be OC), or other background or canon character, or non-human crossover character.

Ah, I see. I suspected it was something like that, but it wasn't mentioned in the FAQ, so I had to guess until I decided just to ask.

That way does seem to leave it a little ambiguous, though. When I've stumbled upon a crossover, for instance, I do wonder if it's a fusion fic or if it's a continuity crossover of the "one visits the other's world" variety.

100% agreed. I HATE the lack of distinction between straight crossovers and adaptations. UGH!
And, yes. It IS ambiguous.
It's just a fill-gap for stuff people don't want to classify as anything else, but do want to note.
I don't really agree with it, especially since background ponies are essentially OCs since they have no defined characterizations, it's only their EXISTENCE that's canonical.
