How I discovered Fimfiction.net / My First Story · 2:19pm Jun 8th, 2015
Today is June 8th! I created this account exactly three years ago, making this my three year anniversary on Fimfiction.net. In my previous blog, I talked how I discovered, and subsequently joined the fandom, so this little story picks off from right there.
There was plenty of brony community on Gameinformer.com, so I wasn't exactly starving from lack of people to talk pony with. Deep within the pony dedicated forums, I discovered a thread that was created for sharing fan fiction. I followed some of the links, which of course led me to this very website. Naturally, the gears in my brain started turning, and I formed a fan fiction idea! Hooray! I hadn't caught up all the available episodes yet, so I made myself wait until I caught up before I started writing my super awesome amazing story. (sarcasm intended)
I thought I was rewarding myself for my patience, but if I could do it all over again, I would have waited longer before writing. You see, I didn't bother reading any other stories before I started writing mine. In fact, I had even decided that every second I spent on this site would be spent writing. I also didn't ask for any feedback my premise before I began either. Had I done more research, I would have learned three very important things:
1. People generally aren't interested in fan fictions staring original characters as the main protagonists.
2. The idea of a cult that worshiped Nightmare Moon had already been done by the most famous pony fan fiction in existence.
3. It's possible to break a story into separate chapters on this website.
My first story, "A Storm of Stars" somehow managed to get more upvotes than downvotes despite grammar mistakes, erratic pacing, and almost zero imagery. On the positive side, the dialogue was amusing. I'm glad now that I didn't delete it, despite it making for a mediocre debut onto Fimfiction.net. Writing that story was gobs of fun, and I think the mostly positive feedback and constructive criticism helped encourage me to continue writing.
