    Sincere Shilling!

    If you like D&D stuff, or just tabletop rpg stuff in general, one of the people I follow online is trying to get funding to create something to sell for Dungeon Masters to increase immersion.

    Happy Holidays

    This is your yearly reminder that I wrote a decently funny Christmas story in the long-ago times. If you haven't read it, you should! If you have read it, maybe you should just stick with blurred memories of how good it was.

    Books!

    So, due to my high level connections here and there, I now have an advance copy of several highly sought after ponyfic books. Now that I've had a chance to check several of them out in person, I have to say that Ponyfeather Publishing does excellent work. Anyone able to pick one up, at Bronycon or ordering them afterward, should totally do so.

    Last Week on City Of Doors 7/7/2019

    So, I've actually been posting on my primary blog lately. Which has been nice, given that I've pulled myself out of depression enough to actually do stuff like that. So, here's been my daily content over there:

Where Earth Meets Sky by Cloudy Skies

More romance than shipping, if you see the difference. I found a lot of sweet moments here. The few scenes from Rainbow Dash’s perspective had a good take on her character. Fluttershy was way in the shy/frightened/worried end of her scale, more than I like really, but that was my biggest complaint. Applejack was done well also. Everypony was more textured than the average we get in the show. I really liked the brief bit we see of Rarity. This was no Yours Truly or Fire & Rain, but I would say it was more than a few notched above average.

I so want to see this as an episode. I think it would even work as one, if you managed to get the nazi pony past Hasbro’s vetting department. It was pretty close to the right mix of absurd humor and sincere moralizing. Plus it has somepony trying to fix a problem with mind-magic, one of the main themes of the show! (Not really, I know. Just seems that way sometimes).

I don’t normally notice and/or mind somewhat overdone prose. See my liking of Eternal for an example. However, this one had me rolling my eyes at least once at how overwrought the language was at a few points. This is basically a clop fic. There is relationship summary in the first third or so of the story. The rest of it is sex, which I mostly skimmed. Seemed to be just as purple-prose as the start of the story, as well as somewhat generic. I’d suggest you just read It’s Always Sunny in Fillydelphia again if you like the pairing of Applejack and Soarin. Also I keep getting the titles of this one and Where Earth Meets Sky mixed up. If they were identical I wouldn’t have so much trouble.

Pow, boom, straight to the feels. It’s been a while since I’ve read a story that was this good at invoking emotion. A very sad emotion. I think this one goes up with Sun Princess by Skywriter as a really good story that I never want to read again because of how it makes me feel. I’ve got pet cats and I’ve been through what happens in this story once or twice. Though when I was much younger and didn’t fully grasp what was going on. I’m not looking forward to the next time I lose a pet, and reading this story was pretty close. Really good story.

Sepia Tock: Adventures of the Ponyville Clockmaker by CanvasWolfDoll

This was decently written, but I didn’t like it much. I’m not a huge fan of the whole Doctor Whooves thing in the first place. Most of my dislike for this is the whole self-aware thing going on, and that has to be done really well for me to enjoy it. Or be done in small doses. Then I was accepting that and the story shifted gears. I would have enjoyed just a simple slice-of-life sort of thing, but about halfway through it changes to a dramatic defeat-the-villain sort of thing. So too much fandom self-reference, inconsistant genre, and pretty much mediocre to average writing. If you like Doctor Whooves you should read this, but if you don’t I would avoid it.

As always, The Big Master Review List is here: { THE MASTER LIST }
If you know of a text-format reviewer I'm not keeping track of, please let me know and I'll see if they meet the criteria to be assimilated into the list.

If you are an author who wants a more detailed review of a story I've covered feel free to message me. My reviews tend to be fairly light, mostly just reactions to a story right after reading it. I am happy to give a more careful read and reply to anyone who wants more precision and/or feedback.
