    Happy Holidays

    This is your yearly reminder that I wrote a decently funny Christmas story in the long-ago times. If you haven't read it, you should! If you have read it, maybe you should just stick with blurred memories of how good it was.

    Books!

    So, due to my high level connections here and there, I now have an advance copy of several highly sought after ponyfic books. Now that I've had a chance to check several of them out in person, I have to say that Ponyfeather Publishing does excellent work. Anyone able to pick one up, at Bronycon or ordering them afterward, should totally do so.

    Last Week on City Of Doors 7/7/2019

    So, I've actually been posting on my primary blog lately. Which has been nice, given that I've pulled myself out of depression enough to actually do stuff like that. So, here's been my daily content over there:

Meet the Friends by Drunken Logic

Liked this one, it was fun. A few bumpy spots, a bit of comedic incoherency. I thought that all of the mane six were characterized well. Several of them were highly exaggerated, but still distinct from each other. Even Fluttershy, though her portrayal was a bit off, I still liked her bit. Even though it’s primarily a comedy there is some well done sweetly romantic stuff right at the start. Going to see if this author has more stories to read. Some slice of life romances inolving the trio would be fun to read.

Eh, the title is all you really need to read. The story is most forgettable with nothing to recommend it. Just play cookie clicker for a bit, then think how Twilight would react to that experience.

Selling Out by Kaorin

This is an intriguing little fragment. I vaguely remember adding it to my read later list a while back when it was marked incomplete with only one chapter. Now it is complete with one chapter. Wonder if the author couldn’t get further ideas to coalesce. Anyway, this is a little peek to a far future Equestria. The whole story is Luna internal monolgue. The author attempts doing it with a dialect/character voice, but doesn’t quite pull it off successfully. Still, the author gets a lot closer than many people who try that sort of thing. The story gives some bits and pieces of worldbuilding that are cool, and is a decent peek into Luna as a character. I’d classify the story as worth the read, but I don’t think I’ll ever read it again or think much about it afterward. Call it a popcorn character study?

Pretty good. I (mostly) liked it. My only annoyance was the story was over in the deep end of the ‘Celestia as omniscient chessmaster’ territory. Now, I enjoy a good amount of Celestia as chessmaster, but this was a bit much for even my tastes. For the entire story I was waiting for our POV main character to be proven a unreliable narrator. That we would glimpse some flaw or sadness from Celestia, or have her comment on his unrealistic expectations of her actions, or something. Nope, it’s all part of her overcomplicated plans. Even to the point where she stands and watches a monster tearing up a fairly large area of a big city. Which seemed really out of character for Princess Celestia. Still, was a good story despite those complications. Had more active pegasi magic than we get in a lot of fanfics. Also had the cool worldbuilding element of mixing different types of magic for effects neither can manage on their own. A nice idea that you could take and do so much with, as well as reinforces the idea that each of the three pony tribes is a part of a bigger whole.

Most of the review, see original for the rest.

The Griffon War: A Soldier's Memoirs by Dusk Quill
[story link] [my original review]

Overall I liked this, but I also had a lot of complaints about it. First, a compliment. It was a nice touch that when the war was just starting Celestia was more worried about the chaos that would result than the war itself. That Discord getting out would be much worse than anything the war itself would involve. It was a very nice touch of Celestia as divine figure keeping the big picture in mind. And I forgot another compliment I wanted to give this fanfic. I did really like the going back and forth between the journal entries and the in-character point of view. Contrasting the somewhat dry or short journal entries with the actual events of what happens was quite effective in places. I’d love to see more stories do this sort of thing.

A tiny piece of the review. Lots more in the original. To sum up: It was really good fantasy military fiction. It was pretty crummy my little pony fan fiction.

As always, The Big Master Review List is here: { THE MASTER LIST }
If you know of a text-format reviewer I'm not keeping track of, please let me know and I'll see if they meet the criteria to be assimilated into the list.

If you are an author who wants a more detailed review of a story I've covered feel free to message me. My reviews tend to be fairly light, mostly just reactions to a story right after reading it. I am happy to give a more careful read and reply to anyone who wants more precision and/or feedback. It might take a while, as more precision means I need to actually think about things instead of just doing stream of consciousness typing.
