A dragon settlement in Equestria? What? · 5:56am Mar 6th, 2015
It's been a while, but I ran into something interesting that I felt the need to talk about.
The IDW comics have a somewhat tenuous connection with canon. A lot of people simply ignore them, but for me, I consider them valid unless they directly contradict information from the show.
But "Friends Forever Issue #14" has pretty much spit on so many episodes of the series that it's almost mind-boggling.
Dragons living in the middle of Equestria (Fillydelphia to be exact)?
Adult dragons roughly the same size as ponies?
What the Hell?
With all of the mystique dragons have been given throughout the series, and the awe-inspiring power they seem to possess in the eyes of ponies, the idea that there's just a "Dragon Town" in the middle of an Equestrian city not only contradicts events from the show, but it defies series lore. It even defies dragon biology as we know it, shrinking them down to being smaller than Iron Will the Minotaur, when the only adult dragons we've ever seen were bigger than Canterlot Castle.
I guess there are explanations for this. Maybe the ones in the town are ALL babies, or maybe my fan-theory about dragons only growing that big if/when they become greed-monsters is actually true, (yes, I am working on that fic, BTW), but that doesn't explain why so little is known about dragon biology when they're just chilling in a random neighborhood in Fillydelphia.
I'm not gonna get too uppity about it. It's an interesting wrinkle, the story itself was cute, if a bit heavy-handed (probably more heavy handed on the racism than the show will ever get).
Also I kind of like Mina the Dragon.
Say what? In the middle of Fillydelphia? That absolutely does not jive with the show. At all. If anyone did this in a fanfic, the critics 'round here would flip their tables.
Quick, change all (excluding Spike) instances of "dragon" with "kobold" and call it Equestrian ignorance. At least, that's the only defense I can think of...
I wondered about that, it does look like dragons in that town aren't very friendly to outsiders, maybe there aren't any pony biologists brave enough to visit dragon town and do some studies? That does raise a lot more questions about Spike's egg though.
