Any Good Names (For Humans)? · 2:16am Feb 28th, 2015
At long last, I've finally started a non-pony related story. The problem is, I've been having a hard time coming up with names for some of the characters. I basically know their personalities and most of the plot, I just have the hardest time naming them. The two characters I need help naming I'll describe below. They're the two main supporting characters, and they're the one's I need the most help on.
Background information:
To start off, the first character is a siren/mermaid. In the plot I'm developing, sirens in this universe can suck the lives out of their victims during an sexually intense moment, or a moment the character is very weak. This is how they live longer lifespans, by seducing men (and sometimes women), into having sex with them and stealing their life when they're the weakest (which will add to their life). The main conflict of the story is the protagonist fighting an internal conflict. She's addicted to stealing the life from others, simply because of the sensation. She takes pride in her appearance and talents, so when she gets into a sexual situation with a young man and feels more than lust the next morning, she doesn't know how to deal with herself. Eris (I know I named her after the goddess of chaos. I thought it'd be appropriate for her character.) confronts her older sister, who claims she can never truly love the boy because nothing human can truly love something inhuman, and the only thing she'll ever feel is lust, as he does for her. Although it seems cliche and uninspired, I feel as though I can make it into something more than a sappy love story, and turn it into something that focuses more on the thought of being imprisoned in one's body, and even go into more about how nobody has to remain a slave of fate, and anything is possible through self-discipline and a strong will.
Anyways, here's the first character I need to be named. She's the older sister to Eris, and much more on the traditional side of things.
Personality: While she's very thoughtful and sweet, the siren is also very careless when it comes to the well-being of her younger sister. She'd rather chain her down with tradition and norms before seeing her cause chaos among their family. Even when she means the best, she still comes off as pushy/aggressive. Despite all that, she's very intelligent, and absolutely adores mythology and reading, along with science.
Appearance: She's very tall, and curvy in body structure. Her skin is rather tan, and her hair is long, natural, and very straight. Her hair is light brown, and her eyes are the color of the sea. In her natural form, her mermaid tail is silver-blue, and she hardly ever wears clothing (she's flat-chested, and only bothers to cover herself on when she goes to shore).
For the first one, I'm looking for something sort of old-fashioned and unique. The second character is male, and I'm looking for a modern name for him.
Personality: He's a college student, who's majoring in Music Theory. He's very passionate about life, and has high hopes for the future. While he does remain very optimistic, he gets stressed very easily. He's socially shy, but does enjoy getting out and exploring on his own from time to time and fishing. Despite his ability to plan and organize things with ease, he's a bit of a slob, and doesn't care much about hygiene or the cleanness of his apartment.
Looks: I imagine him to be very average in weight, and maybe a bit chubby. He has long (for a guy), wavy, dark brown hair. His eyes are green, and he has freckles on his face. He usually has a little bit of scruff on his face from not shaving, and he's not too tall.
So, that's basically what I have to work with so far. Please tell me if you have any ideas for these characters. I'll probably make a blog when I finish the first chapter of my story, just for anyone who's interested. Thanks for reading, and I'm opened to all suggestions.
Don't go for looking for good names... look for names you want to avoid! Bob, Sally, Harry, Dick, Andy, John, Jesus, Arnold, Carlos, Lee, Mary, Sue, and so on...
You could try those name websites. Like Behind the Name, or name meanings. I often times use these sites to help me think of names for human characters. Just type the word that fits your character and you'll be given so many choices. Those sites might help.
