#FebFIMFanFicLove review: My Little Pirates: Doctor's Orders · 1:23am Feb 5th, 2015
This is a review for the #FebFIMFanFicLove Fic Exchange.
My Little Pirates: Doctor's Orders by Fullmetal Pony (chosen by Allen Vth)
Oh boy. One Piece. Guess which anime I've never seen? My knowledge of One Piece is this: it's about pirates, and it has a stretchy guy in it. That's it.
On with the review, then!
I really should have rejected this fic from the Fic Exchange, because not only is it a crossover, it also seems to be the Nth part of a series. So I'm reading the sequel to something I didn't read, of a crossover with something that I've never seen. Because of that, there's absolutely no way I can do this story justice with a review, because I won't be able to go into any kind of detail. Which is a shame, because I wanted to set a good example for the other participants. Oh well!
I will at least try to give my thoughts on the fic, anyway, because I do love crossovers. This one, unfortunately, doesn't seem to explore any of the characters deeply enough for me to understand what they're like. The protagonist of the story is Trafalgar Law, who is a surgeon, and seems to have rather bizarre surgical abilities that allow him to dismember people without actually harming them. That's kinda weird, but then so am I, so I think that's kinda cool. :) Law seems to be a stoic no-nonsense type, and is therefore immediately paired with Pinkie as per comedic law.
One problem I have is that, despite Law being the protagonist, I never really get to understand him as a character. We don't really get inside his head and his motivations are never clear. And since nobody else gets any exploration at all, there's not a lot I can say about him. He just kind of tags along on the story and occasionally slices ponies up with his sword.
So without an understanding of the characters or knowledge of the show, there's not a lot I can get out of the fic, but it does have two things that I like: one, ponified humans (the One Piece guys), which are always fun to see, and two - bodyswapping. The god-mode surgeon guy seems to have the ability to swap two peoples' minds, so he does it to Rainbow Dash and Pinkie. Apparently it's an act of kindness on his part, as Rainbow Dash is also injured for reasons that aren't clear, so by swapping the two ponies, Dash is able to attend a Wonderbolt Derby in Pinkie's body. Which is really cool, although again, there isn't much detail to it. Dash just kind of accepts it pretty much straight away, although there is one funny scene later where Dash is desperately trying not to give away the fact that she's not Pinkie, and her resulting weird behaviour convinces everyone that she is anyway. :)
While at the derby, she gets into an argument with Prince Blueblood, which is funny to me because it ironically reminds me of the Lunaverse where Pinkie/Blueblood is a canon ship. (Seriously. It's adorable too).
Aaaaand... that's all I got, really. It's a shame I couldn't go into more detail on this. It's written well enough, but probably only of interest to people who like One Piece.
"That's kinda weird" is a good way to sum up just about every character in one piece, on both sides. You might want to check it out if you're a fan of the weird.
2771022 - I guess it depends on the execution. I know a lot of people love the show and nobody's ever said anything bad about it. I've just never been into pirates, so I always gave it a miss in favor of shows with giant robots in. ^^
2775337 - that's quite all right, an event like this comes with such risks! To be honest I was actually interested to read it, because sometimes crossovers can give a fun insight into a world you never knew (Turnabout Storm completely opened my eyes to Ace Attorney for example). But the fic never really did that for me, and also started in medias res, so all I could say was that there was a bunch of stuff going on. :)
