Prologue Length? · 8:36pm Jan 21st, 2015
Just out of curiosity: What does everyone think is an appropriate length for the prologue to a story? And at what point would it be better to count a longer prologue as the first chapter of a tale instead (in terms of word count, etc.)?
Thanks!
I gues it is differend for every story?
2738206 I guess so. It's probably whatever feels appropriate. ^_^
The purpose of a prologue is to set the stage for the action happening within the story. It should be used to give any vital information to the readers that they wouldn't know otherwise, or to provide a backdrop to the rest of the story.
That being said, a prologue needn't be lengthy to the point of telling a story in itself, and it shouldn't tell the story the main chapters do either. As long as one follows those guidelines, a prologue can be any length, though a shorter introduction is usually for the better.
2742827 Thanks for the valuable insight! That's a pretty nice description of a prologue, and what one can accomplish by doing it just right.
2742840 No prob. Keep rockin'.
2742847 I will do my best, and best wishes to you as well!
