Story Recommendations of the Day · 1:26pm Jan 7th, 2012
This is the beginning of what will be a semi-regular series of posts. I love good stories, and I love sharing good stories. So, here, have some good stories!
These are some of the stories I've read recently and have enjoyed. I hope some of y'all like them too.
AbsoluteAnonymous' "The Games We Play"
http://www.fimfiction.net/story/3479/The-Games-We-Play
Synopsis: "There's been another sighting of the mysterious Mare Do Well...but this time, all of Rainbow Dash's friends plead ignorance, insisting that they've put aside their costumes for good. Rainbow Dash is determined to uncover the masked mare's true identity before she's humiliated yet again, but this time around, the vigilante seems especially interested in her as well. Will Rainbow Dash be able to solve the mystery before the culprit takes the hoax too far? Or is she in danger of losing not only her mind, but her heart?"
It's brilliant. It's very heavy on RD introspection and character exploration, if you like that sort of thing, and if you're in this fandom, there's a strong chance you do. Be forewarned--it's a long story, and the pacing is much closer to a novel's than to a short story's. But it's worth it.
Sir Gimp of Baath's "Causality"
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7474165/1/Causality
Synopsis: "Twilight Sparkle devises a new experiment to test Pinkie's Pinkie Sense. But when the experiment takes an unexpected turn, Twilight must try to understand her feelings for Pinkie and unravel the secrets of Pinkie Sense."
This is THE TwiPie story, as far as I'm concerned. It's written in the first person, from Twilight's perspective, and the writer's Twilight voice is very good and very strong. It sounds very much like a bit older and bit more mature Twilight Sparkle. And there are some lovely characterizations of Pinkie that allow her to be three-dimensional without veering into OOC territory.
Ringcaat's "The Combinatorics Project"
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7281053/1/The_Combinatorics_Project
Synopsis: "Surprises, emotions, and apple farming abound in this comprehensive shipfic's epic finale! When disaster threatens the health and life of a friend, Twilight throws herself into an audacious new project that may unsettle the multiverse!"
It's brilliant. By turns, it's funny, sad, romantic, ridiculous, heart-warming, heart-breaking. And the fourth chapter contains a character study on Pinkie Pie that is, hooves down, the most brilliant look at Pinkie Pie that this fandom's ever produced.
TheVulpineHero1's "Pink & Blue"
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7709212/1/Pink_Blue
Synopsis: "Experimental drabble collection looking at the Rainbow Dash X Pinkie Pie pairing. Mostly for practice. Please R advice welcome."
These are true drabbles, stories of about 100 words in length. Each one is amazing, a tiny little nugget of wonderful. The author is incredibly adept at packing a lot of detail, implied background story, and emotional content into very few words. This is what "Of Parties and Rainbows" might be, if I was as good a writer as this one is.
thanks a bunch! it's always nice to see people sharing good stories, I will certainly be trying the ones i wasn't already following
Okey. Let me say this first, I really hate leave comment because I always have this feelling I'm not saying anything who worth to being read it.
But here, you've just mentioned a couple of my favorite fics.
The Games We Play: I think you gave it a perfect descripction.
The Combinatorics Project:
Six ponies.
Fifteen combinations.
Five alternate universes.
Infinite potential.
This story is not only well writing. I think the most wonderful thing about this fic is how everypony is in character, and the way every relationship made sense, some way.
I don't have anything to say about "Causality", just that I have to read it again because I forget what happen after the machine thing.
And I jus read "Blue and Pink" Those are really short chapters, but also they're pretty good. My favorite is chapter 5: Defiance.
Well, I think that's all.
See ya.

You're always welcome to leave comments on my blog, for what it's worth. Agree very much with how I was impressed at how everyone remained at least mostly in character during each pairing in The Combinatorics Project and how each relationship did make it own kind of sense.
