    Knowing Nothing, and Starting Over

For the past year and a half, I have been attempting to learn Chess. I started out at 100 ELO, which is to say I started out at the very bottom. I couldn't beat anybody for the first few weeks, and before this, I had never won against anyone in my life, not even a computer. After I finally understood enough to know how to win, I started winning one game out of every five.

Fighting To Write, So Far Victorious

I had not posted anything since the year started, but this does not mean that I have not been writing. Indeed, I had taken bookplayer's and First_Down's advice and looking at Jim Butcher's blogs, and attempting to stick with one of his recommendations: write. The only way that I am going to improve is to write.

2015

Week 1 of 2015 · 3:04pm Jan 8th, 2015

Before the new year began, I had made myself a resolution to stick to a word-goal, to write a specific number of words every single day. For the first week, I picked a low number: 1,000. I've always been flimsy when it comes to keeping up with deadlines and goals, and I pushed myself very hard to meet this goal, at least for one week.

And after seven days, I can say that I met my goal each time. I've been working on a story for the past week, with just 1,000 words or more a day, and I can say that I now have 8,473 words in my document. Not every word was written in 2015; a scant few passages were written the year before, and I thought they would suit my story (for now). Here's how my first week went:

January 1: 1,047 words written, 202 words pasted, 1,249 words total
January 2: 1,113 words written, 2,362 words total
January 3: 1,127 words written, 3,489 words total
January 4: 1,010 words written, 4,796 words total
January 5: 1,284 words written, 6,082 words total
January 6: 1,120 words written, 7,202 words total
January 7: 1,271 words written, 8,473 words total

For my story, I have the first chapter ready for me to edit for a final draft, and I might just finish the second chapter today. I will be working on editing the first chapter today for posting, and I will be trying to get more drawn on my coverart (I have very little at the moment).

I've also tried reading The Turn of the Screw, and I'm eight chapters in. If you don't know what that is, it's a ghost-story horror novel from 1898, written by Henry James. So far, it's one of those stories where the children are perfection and the spookiest thing that's happened so far is two dead people appearing on the Bly residence. I honestly am having trouble being immersed into it, although environmental issues around me may be causing that.

If you haven't noticed (and I'd be surprised if anyone did), I've been posting quotes on my page to keep the momentum of the new year flowing. Here's a compilation of quotes that I've posted daily:

"The will to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach your full potential... these are the keys that will unlock the door to personal excellence.

—Confucius

"If you can dream it, you can do it."

—Walt Disney

"Patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish."

—John Quincy Adams

"Keep your dreams alive. Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination and dedication. Remember all things are possible to those who believe."

—Gail Devers (gold-medalist 100m runner; world champion 100m hurdles)

"Patience has its limits. Take it too far, and it's cowardice."

—George Holbrook Jackson

"Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope or confidence."

—Helen Keller

"Perseverance is not a long race; it is many short races one after the other."

—Walter Elliot

These are just for fun and potential motivation.

Finally, if you're reading "A Little Cream for a Lotta Coco," then I should let you know that I've yet to get chapter 2 finished. I apologize for my laziness on that part.

If you've been doing things, or have been struggling to do things, this year, then please leave a comment below. It's been a while since I've spoken with you guys, and I'd like to see how you've been doing.Wa

"The turn of the screw" is horrible.

I suggest you throw it at a wall and then burn it before it sucks too much of your time.
