Why the Professor Hulk was arguably the best thing to happen to The Hulk · 7:57pm Jan 1st, 2015
The Merged Hulk is now known, only officially and not really in canon, as "The Professor." The Professor is the representative of Bruce Banner's ideal version of himself. At first this might seem to fly in the face of what Peter David accomplished with the merging of the different Hulks, and yes World War Hulk was NOT the first time this happened, but take a look at it logically. Banner has a mental disorder. Simply confronting that fact and the root of the disease's origin would not wipe out the mental disease. Bruce knew he was in trouble and a "psychological ramification" occurred again as it did on the day of the first gamma bomb test, and many times after. Bruce created a new personality for himself. A confident man, no longer a clumsy awkward scientist, but a 1200 pound engine of muscle and know-how. The Professor is everything that Banner wants to be, and as such is just as much a means of escape as either the Savage or Grey/Fixit Hulks. It's also a lot easier to see why this "cure" failed from here. The Professor wasn't the end result as he was billed to be, but just another poor faction that fell to the core personality's insecurities and psychological failings.
Now I personally believe that the concept of the Professor Hulk, which has been reused here and there at times such as the recent "Doc Green" Hulk, though that's an entirely different persona, would have worked. REALLY worked I mean, if they had done this. Made it where Bruce was either stuck in Hulk form or at least had total control over his transformations like She-Hulk, yet still had to deal with the mental effects of getting angry and slipping into Savage Hulk or worse Mindless Hulk.
The thing about Hulk has always been the darker side, the rage, the Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde scenario. Show a Bruce that is finally "living the dream" so to speak as a hero... But there's ALWAYS that nagging thought at the back of his mind that when he slips up... The TRUE Hulk will come out to play.
I mention this because I legitimately LIKE the idea of a smart, intelligent, Hulk who still has to deal with going berserk and smashing everyone around him if he's not careful. I site the Hulk Agents of SMASH cartoon as a good example. Is it the BEST cartoon in the world? Nope. But as a major Hulk fan I find it hard NOT to watch it and give it at least a try. There they DO show this kind of Hulk... But he still shows the fears of "letting the monster out" so to speak and Bruce Banner is nowhere to be seen. While it might be lazy not to have Bruce involved, and I admit it kinda is, the idea that even The Hulk HIMSELF is afraid of what he could do? I like the idea IMMENSELY.
So with that I leave you with this
And then Marvel gave Hulk it's own Hulk
Hulkception
We have to go deeper

Haven't actually watched Agents of S.M.A.S.H. yet. The reality-show interviews I saw in the ads turned me off.
2731185 Yeah... It's still one of the better new Marvel cartoons
2731195 Better than Ultimate Spider-Man and Avengers Assemble?
2732659 Eh, most episodes it's hit and miss. Heard one episode is gonna have Carnage... As voiced by Mark Hamill
2733023 Isn't that his second Spidey villain?
2734340 Yep. First was Hobgoblin in Spider-Man TAS.
2734358 That was kind of interesting, since Hobgoblin came before Green Goblin in that world. Guess they figured the more famous character should be the one who's an upgrade.
