Redstreak Jack: Orchards of Time, and other things · 5:14pm Jun 27th, 2012

Blog Number 2: Report after roughly one week away from the site.

Well, a quick progress update, and then I'll get to the meat of this message. My total story view count has now surpassed the 5,000 views benchmark (specifically 5,261), and all but two stories (Baking for Humble Pie and Horse Apple Turnover) seem to have been generally quite good, if the likes and favourites are any indication. The only new story added since my last blog is Redstreak Jack: Orchards of Time. At present, I have 28 followers and 20 users whom I follow.

Now for the meat. Things are slow, but at least I managed to get out another story and prove that I'm not totally slouching. I think I can pat myself on the back for that.

Vis-a-vis my original goal, I still think I'm being slow, but I've identified why: I am trying to tackle too many big projects simultaneously. I am not joking when I say that those four "works in progress" on my user page (Jovia, Scootadare, Cranky Loony Feathers and Forever Classic) are not the entire set of works I've tried my hand at, but they are the top four when ranked by completeness. I'll have to cut down on big projects, practise with some fun one-shots along the side, and focus on Redstreak Jack (and possibly Cutie Mark Espionage Agency).

On that note, I am working on Redstreak Jack's second chapter now. I refuse to set a deadline, as it makes the whole thing too formal and that kind of move seems to kill my enthusiasm for a creative enterprise. Also, since it's going to be long (I'd guess about 15-20,000 words) and I want it to be good and checked over, all I can say at this stage is relax and enjoy some other stuff in the meantime. I don't want to sound like I'm making excuses, though, and I've got a great load of ideas I'd love to share through this story, so there's hope yet!

There's no guarantee I'll act on them, but any suggestions are welcome here if you happen to be passing. Who knows, it could be an inspiration for a short?

There are plenty of fanfics on the site - I've recently discovered Shipping and Handling, a few Daring Do stories (see my favourites for some), Moonspire Run, and a fair few works by John Perry and Obselescence - which hopefully you'll like as well as I do if you haven't already read them. Or you could watch Blazing Saddles on DVD, or Star Trek, or Darkwing Duck episodes on Youtube (I looked for them to find out more about the show's references, for instance after "The Mysterious Mare-Do-Well"). I'd prefer to know people were treating themselves. Come to that, anything referenced in the show you could recommend? I've seen the I Love Lucy original on Youtube, for example, but there are bound to be more (sometimes obscure) references I've missed. It's amazing how wide the show's scope is for references.

Lastly, any fic recommendations are always welcome. In my case, I like Comedy, Slice of Life, and Adventure. Anything that's like the show's style is particularly welcome. No grimdark or "mature" content, though I don't mind a bit of spookiness or creepiness to a story. And nothing longer than 100,000 words unless it is really top quality. Thanks in advance!

Chow for now! Impossible Numbers out.

:derpyderp2: How many words!? That's a bit on the long side... :applejackconfused:

:applejackunsure: The Fires of Friendship was a good read, though, so why not? I could give it a try, so I'll add it to my Reading List. Thanks for that. :scootangel:

*squees that CMEA may get continued*

:coolphoto: Thanks for the advice. I discovered Short Cakes that way, and added a few more adventure stories to my reading list. :ajsmug: Thanks.
