Oh jeez. (Feedback requested) · 10:39am Dec 19th, 2014
I am so, so sorry.
I'm sitting here writing—yes, writing!—the chapter to post on Christmas, and it's going fine, no, don't worry about that. I'll post it on time.
Just... I was amused by a passing recollection that the chapters I post on Christmas are always the badass action-y ones. I remembered, of course, posting Chapter 5 that first time after eight months of silence, but couldn't recall what the second one was, so I went to look.
It was Chapter 10.
The chapter where they talk to Emberstoke.
Meaning I posted TWO CHAPTERS in 2014. Sure, they were big ones. 30k words, so more like three chapters, but still. That's just unacceptable. The flashback was a huge point of stress for me and resulted in huge swaths of nothing on both sides of it, but even so, there's just no excuse. I NEED to do better than that.
I am not incapable of writing, damn it. I like to think I'm actually pretty decent at it. I mean, hell, look at me now. I need to post a chapter on Christmas, so I'm writing. It's as simple as that. It should be as simple as that.
The Important Bit
I think... I'm going to start a Patreon. Things are actually really tight here, now (Ie. Family is not doing christmas levels of tight), and frankly—I apparently need something to force me write. If not a kick in the ass, then a carrot, at least.
Any feelings on that? It wouldn't be monthly, of course—god no. It'd be per-chapter averaging 10,000 words, with little or nothing in the way of goals or the like. Basically, the best thing I can offer is actual updates.
Yes/no/maybe? I'm harassing everyone subscribed to Sharing the Night, so I expect to see some replies in the morning afternoon when I wake up
That's more like five normal sized chapters.
I wouldn't mind throwing a few bucks your way to help out.

It's really amazing what even a few bucks can do... I actually have one insane person who is still subscribed to the Flattr after I quietly swept it under the rug for its failure to actually inspire anyone else to set one up, (which was the whole point for me at the time. Flattr only makes sense to use if it's ubiquitous), and yet that small amount each month actually became a few nice things I could get for myself.
2663852 I meant to sign up for your flattr and... forgot. Repeatedly. But if you set up a patreon, I'll gladly donate some.

Well, like I said at the time, I didn't set up the Flattr for the sake of actually getting donations myself... which is a self-fulfilling prophecy. I don't blame anyone for not using it (and not many did).
Patreon is really much better, in my opinion. Not only does it provide a much better system for actually encouraging content creators to create content and much more engaging systems for patrons (Ie. Goals and Rewards), but their fees are much more reasonable (About half what Flattr took),
My only complaint about Patreon would be the inability to easily have multiple content types for people to subscribe to on one page—like, pledge $5 for a 10k word StN chapter or $3 for a different story with 6k word chapters. I guess if it comes to that, though, I'd just list two 6k word chapters together when the second one (on Patreon, I mean. I'd still post each one as they were done.)
Still, some people might only like one story... I'd probably have to make a second account, which is something they allow for that purpose. Ah well, I'll think about it if it ever actually comes up. I still haven't managed a beginning for Schrödinger's Dawn that isn't too tell-y...
I'd donate
You know. This is probably one of only two stories on the site I might actually consider donating for. Admittedly I probably won't, since I don't have much disposable income, but I would still be sorely tempted and might do it anyways in a fit of madness and "I want the story now!"
I'm just happy you do continue to write. There are so many fantastic stories out there that just get dropped without a word. Also...
I know you probably mean a carrot on a stick, but this seems to heavily imply the carrot will, in fact, be going up your ass. This amused me.
I'm broke as hell but if it means more Sharing the Night I'll scream encouragement at you all day.

Those aren't chapters, they're novellas.
I'd support you! (As long as you are writing something I enjoy, like Sharing the Night)
Aye.
It's probably just my lingering distrust of Patreon after getting screwed by certain people using it to turn previously-free content into Patrons-only content...
But I don't like the wording here, it's too vague. Maybe I'm just brainderping, but it sounds like you're going to only give updates to people who fork over cash.

Definitely not. Patreon rewards are meant to be extras. The page is up now, and as you can see, the extras are extras, and the goals are purely designed to make me write. Content-rewards for patrons is, frankly, not something I can afford to spend time and inspiration on when I could be doing actual chapters,
Posted to your Patreon page. Happy writing.
