So thoughtstreaming hiccups happen... · 7:22pm Oct 31st, 2014
First off, this is from a comment on The Chase (superb fic all should read!) I made recently in an attempt to help someone understand just how crazy immense the power of alicorns truly is.
To add a bit more to this particular matter, I'll throw in a few pennies myself. Personally, I think it is often difficult to comprehend just because of how vast and powerful alicorns truly are. Bucky happens to have capacity for tapping into ley lines and sources of magic beyond most unicorns without even taking into account being Touched and unascended.
To borrow from some concepts I'll be writing into my own story down the road, I'll present a situation to help express things in a manner hopefully easier to take in.
Think of a city on Earth, doesn't matter which, that is about to be destroyed. Imagine that there are tens of thousands of people present (large enough numbers that it stops meaning much to count each one), all about to die. Add in a single being able to reach out their influence and touch them all. Not one at a time, but every single person at the exact same time in equal measure. It is hard to imagine, but try to think on what it would be like to recognize every single individual as unique to that being's influence, from the average to children, elderly, injured, paralyzed, the sick and ill. Each and every single one standing out at the same time. Then said being using it's influence to teleport them all together to safety. And not just teleport them en masse, but every single individual placed carefully amidst a new arrangement than they were to prevent any from suddenly dropping out of the air or being buried in the ground, all of them gently settled together so not even one would fall over and laying down those that needed such. Imagine all that reach and vast power. How awe inspiring and terrifying a single being would be to most people after an event like that. How hard it is for people to trust the average person without much power over them at all and how hard it would be for the average person to trust a being with that much power. Think how hard it is for most to trust ordinary politicians that are supposed to lead in good faith.
Then think about what happens if instead of teleporting them all to safety from a disaster, such a being instead used that kind of power to cause any kind of harm.
And how many centuries it would take for a world full of average minds just living ordinary lives to find any kind of trust again.
Alicorns are deities. They are beyond most measures of what power even is.
I have noticed most writers gloss over or entirely restrain what Celestia and Luna are capable of. To be quite honest, most fics have, on some level at least, reduced their reality purely because writing with that kind of entity on the field makes for awkward things difficult to work with. Simplest way to fix it is make them weaker. Consequently, this is why I find I cannot really stand anything playing off of DBZ crap. Yeah, those characters are strong but they are STILL far below what alicorns actually reach. It's a personal opinion though. I simply feel like that sort of thing achieves off the charts ludicrousness. Meh, it's all a matter of plot devices and writing yourself excuses to get something done.
The annoying thing is, I wrote the above comment. I also wrote the chapter Test Results. I was thoughtstreaming my words out like usual. I had hiccups in the form of details I missed that I have to go back and adjust, as well as some I forgot to add entirely.
One of the things I forgot, was a little more explanation. The magic flux had no lasting effect on Twilight because her very nature as an alicorn can restore her so long as she lives. Lacking that, my OC was really scrambled. Twilight's influence balanced some things and upset others. I'll add the specifics to the chapter and cover more later on, as the princesses in my story are practicing archmages in private and as applicable to their rule. I also need to spend some more time thinking about specific things, such as how the princesses technically can craft artifacts together, it is a process requiring immense preparation and is very draining. There is also slipping in the general mechanics of how my OC moved the pieces of glass orb out of Celestia's magical grip when he's far less powerful than Twilight and she couldn't.
And heck, Test Results was only the first HALF of a pivotal day. My poor OC has more trouble coming and we haven't even started the Royal Summit. Here's a spoiler: all out sparring with Shining Armor when my OC is openly challenged to test him. It's something I only briefly hinted at back in, what...chapter two when his eyes worked? It was a half-formed idea now grown that let's me do something dramatic. Everything gets an excuse! >:D
And musing about where the story is going...honestly, I don't know how long it will eventually be or when the looming fight begins. In a general sense, the big baddie is something easy enough to deduce. Who it is I am talking about that does something different though, perhaps less so. Even after the story eventually ends though, I have ideas in my head not unlike Xenophilia: Further Tales is to Xenophilia (worth the read, btw). Obviously, I have a while yet before getting to that stuff. So much to do still.
I also murdered a ficus tree today. Took about 20 minutes, branch loppers, a chainsaw...and it was a pile and a stump. Yesterday, it was digging 40 inches down to help our family friend plumber install a 4in cleanout pipe to help take care of roots from said freakin' ficus fracas. We had previously poo poo pipe plug problems. There was much ew.

On why there is a royal guard.
