I hate my English classes. · 12:44am Oct 3rd, 2014
To put it simply, I really, really, really just don't like how much thought I have to put into everything I read like my goddamn (or Celestia-damned) life depends on it.
That's not to say that I decry analysis and analytical minds--far from it--but both A.) Forcing me to read books from genres I've had little interest in and continue to have no interest in, and B.) Making me have to find some semblance of meaning behind it all--be it my own interpretation or what the author in question meant to convey--just sucks the entire fun out of reading stories. That's also not to say that I'm a vapid, unthinking person because I'd really like to think I'm not. I just think that having to go so far as to understand the plot of the story, the basics of the interactions between characters, and a good enough understanding of where the author is taking you on this journey is more than enough to satisfy things. Getting into the rest of that nitty-gritty stuff is just a good bonus, especially if you stumble onto it by surprise and get to have that "AH HA!" moment.
Suffice to say, getting an English major is killing me. Not even Pinkie can make this more fun without completely rewriting the script of the class.

Hmm, yeah that does sound like quite the pain.
the fastest way to kill any joy of reading, boring writers and subjects you don't care about...
2502454 Of course, this is entirely relative. I imagine there are people who are just as annoyed by a lack of deep analysis in a book, much less those whose job is to do that kind of analysis.
I just don't want to be those people.
2502457 Eh, I wouldn't call them "Boring", but they definitely aren't in a genre I actually would enjoy reading. I'm definitely a fiction guy, not non-fiction.
Agreed on the subject part. I'd honestly find more enjoyment from a class meant to aid in designing plots and plot ideas (not necessarily the best, but laying down a more formal way to get from Point A to Point B in your story and actually have it make sense) or descriptions (which is my bane as far as writing goes and one of my biggest hurdles). And they're honestly needed for those intended for a writing career, not analysis of previous writers.
Don't feel too bad. You proofread my stories, so you already now how shitty my English is. It's the only freaking language I speak!
