Chapter 30: The Breaking Point – Nationalization and Nationalism Collide
With this we end off the Pegasi nationalism problem that's been building up throughout the chapters. Sort of. I'm sure a lot of you already know where this is going, but the ride's not over just yet. There's still more twists and turns to come!
And we get into everyone's favorite alicorn princess! While it may seem like a lot of Loose Change's opinions (meta or not) may be expressed by me, that is very rarely the case. Things that I seem to express dissatisfaction on in the fic, even written from the author's outlook, are very rarely ever my own opinions. Always think of most of the opinions expressed in the fic to be mostly Loose Change's. (I have nowhere near the hatred for Celestia as she does for example, I actually quite like her, even if it seems like at some points this could be a hate fic against her, but I'll get to that more once we reach the end)
I obviously don't fear that strongly about Princess Cadence, but here I think this is the closest to Loose Change's opinions as I get in this essay. Cadence is fine, yes, but she's just so...uninteresting. She's appeared multiple times, and has had multiple opportunities to show her stuff, but she never really does expand across that one alicorn princess. She doesn't really have as much character to speak of as of yet, and so Loose Change's comment of being a bland Celestia clone seemed to fit. I do hope one day she has a few more interesting character traits (and I'm sure some Cadence fans would be quick to point out my mistakes), but as is, there she stands.
And to some of the hardcore fans of the show, I do get into some of the more extended canon points of the franchise. I think this chapter in particular expresses the most obscure mlp media references in the fic so far. Cadence's backstory is lifted completely off from what was written in the (semi?)-canonical Twilight Sparkle and the Crystal Heart Spell, the first of the pony chapter book series. I wouldn't expect many people to actually read that (it wasn't that great of a read anyways, but some parts like Cadence's backstory were interesting at least), but for those who had, it acts as another neat little tie-in to some of the show's "Expanded Universe" so-to-speak. And Cadence's backstory, oh man. That really was some Grade A Material for Loose Change right there. I always do try to tie in as many official media/sources of the show's universe that deal with the past as much as possible. Just so that in a weird kinda way, the fic stays compliant with all material, even though that may not always be the case. But I always do try to connect the dots, tying even the most canonical questionable yet reasonable stories into one semi fic-based universe. It really is a sort of my own celebration to all the show's media.
And I gave a brief shout-out to the Celestia pink toy figure thing too (as I said, don't underestimate how much of the pony-verse, in-show or meta I'm willing to cover); I think I actually got the theory from a video I watched from a prominent youtuber, on how he conspiracy'd suspected Cadence was made to re-sell the incorrectly colored Celestia toys. But I totally forgot who it was by. But the theory was super interesting, and it stuck with me for this long! If anyone can remember or link me to that video, I'd greatly appreciate it!
Anyways, I think I've said enough for now. Not too many read these blogposts of mine I guess, but I do hope those who do get some kind of insight on the writing process if you wanted it. I don't exactly use these posts for blogging it seems, think of them more as extended Author's Notes. I feel adding in Author's Notes at the end of chapters breaks the immersion of Loose Change writing the essay, so these blogposts really let me share some of my experiences writing the chapter with you guys! I hope it's at least somewhat interesting to anybody who's curious!
