Lessons of Celestia: 5 · 7:59am Jun 13th, 2012

The relationships between beings in the Cosmos can be exceedingly strange. Those that would normally be completely inferior to you may one day be placed in control of your destiny by higher powers with a strange sense of humor. Let me illustrate this with a story.

Do you see this cushion on my chair? It is decorated with a wooden button in the shape of a sea pony. This is a very popular symbol--I’m sure you’ve seen it in the designs of railings and decorative borders as well as in cushion-buttons. But this design is in fact the very first sea pony ever created.

I met the stallion who carved that sea pony, fifteen hundred years ago. His name was Chiseled Board and he was an earth pony. He led a quite ordinary life: got a wood-related cutie mark at a young age, married his next-door neighbor, sired four daughters, and never left the town where he was born. He was well-respected in Hoofington, which was but a tiny village back then, both as a craftspony and as an individual.

Chiseled Board invented the sea ponies one night while trying to get his daughters to go to sleep, so he could get a late order done in time. The story he told about them did the trick, and over the years he invented more and more stories about these creatures. The daughters told the stories to their friends, and they in turn urged him to tell them yet more stories. The parents of these friends also found these stories to be charming, and started ordering furniture and knick-knacks from him with the request that he include sea pony designs in them. Hence the button.

The whole thing became quite popular. Fathers other than Chiseled Board tried their hand at inventing their own adventures for the sea ponies. Chiseled Board’s eldest daughter continued the tradition after his death by telling the old stories plus some of her own to her own children, and including sea pony designs in her woodworking. After about a hundred years, the fad finally died down. I regret to admit that I had something to do with it--I thought they were entirely too cute for their own good, and more than a little unrealistic, as their creator had never set sight upon the sea in his entire life. Unfortunately, I failed to keep this opinion to myself--you can guess the result. As none of the stories had ever been written down, the extensive lore about the sea ponies that Chiseled Board invented soon faded completely out of the common knowledge, leaving only the popular visual design, and my memories. I thought that would be the end of the matter.

About three hundred years ago, Canterlot was visited by Vestruvious, the greatest dragon explorer in history. For two whole years he regaled the court with fantastic tales of what he had seen roaming the dark corners of the outer oceans. The dragon knew little about ponies when he arrived among us, and he had to speak through an interpreter. And yet he knew about the sea ponies. He knew about them because he had met them.

They lived in a lonely atoll tens of thousands of pony-lengths away from the nearest shore, and Vestruvious believed that he was the first creature not of their kind that they had ever met. They gave him a written record of their history, which for an aquatic race was quite an achievement. Vestruvious could make neither heads nor tails of the document, but I could, because it was written in the Equestrian of Chiseled Board’s day.

That history was a complete mirror of the stories the residents of Hoofington had told about them twelve hundred years earlier, even the really bad ones.

Now at first, I took this to be an elaborate joke at my expense. But there is little in this world that the Sun cannot see, and I soon found the sea ponies in their little atoll, and they were exactly the creatures that Chiseled Board had invented. And every story they wrote down actually happened to them.

Now this is what I want you to think about: How can this be? Did Chiseled Board somehow dream of these creatures who actually existed, and then told those dreams to his daughters? Was he some sort of god disguised as a pony, who could not help creating anything his mind imagined?

I’ll tell you what I think. I think that some higher being heard Chiseled Board telling those stories, and liked them so much that she made them true. Or maybe she heard how much I despised them, and made them true for no other reason but to provoke me. So perhaps they are a joke at my expense after all.

Now ponder this if you dare: If such a thing as sea ponies are real, what else about the world might be the result of innocent stories brought to life by mischievous gods?
