I've been here for a couple of years now and well, I've noticed a common dream among a lot of the writers here on Fimfiction. Most recently, I read an early blog of one Fantasia Archsage and I should've known at the point what I was signing in for when we started talking. But I didn't, I never realised what kind of person he really was until after he left. I'm not here to bash another user, I'm here to discuss that common dream so many of us have. One that I entirely disagree with.
That dream goes something like this: "I wanna be the greatest writer Fimfiction has ever seen." "I wanna be the best." "I wanna be the greatest writer whoever lived."
I have seen that all over the place, now I'm not saying we shouldn't have dreams. I say go for it, I chase your dreams but I don't see it as a very realistic aspiration to have. What most people know or don't understand is that, writing isn't like other professions. Writing isn't something you can master. Nobody can ever become the master. Why? Why would you say such a terrible thing Crystal Secret? Well, look at this way.
In other professions like fine cuisine or boxing, in which there is a correct, defined way of doing it. You can become the master, one of the very best. But in writing, the English language is constantly changing and growing and therefore is difficult to truly master it. Another point I should make is that we are all different, we all have different imaginations and different ideas. We all write in different styles and therefore none of us can ever truly master the art of writing.
Now, I'm not here to diminish anybody's dreams but personally I feel that I don't need to become the 'best.' I simply need to aspire to become better than myself. Because while I do have aspirations and goals for this site, my goal isn't to become the greatest writer Fimfiction has ever seen but rather the greatest writer that I can be. Cause that's a realistic dream.
Yet, one might argue that dreams are powerful and can motivate a person to accomplish to do great things. While that is true it can also be quite harmful, I have seen characters so driven by their dream they go crazy. In anime and even in a certain ponyfiction here on the site.
I encourage everyone to go for their dreams but instead of becoming the best why not strive to become better? Sure, dream big and aspire to do amazing things but a journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.

Well...I'll tell you what, if enough people post their goals for the site in the comments below I would make another blog and tell you a bit about what I plan to accomplish in my time here. But only if enough people comment though!
