I'm not going to cover all types, but I'll cover a couple, mainly ones that I have worked on.
Revolution
So I have actually helped a person work on the beginning of a revolution fanfiction and ripped them apart on it. Why? One simple point that a good revolution fanfic needs. Believability. It can't just be revolution because revolution. There needs to be a cause. He had a cause, but it was a cause no one had heard of, happened over a thousand years ago, and had absolutely nothing to do with current times. Revolutions are dark and gritty and make for great dramas and stories, but if you cannot get behind the revolution, or see why they are rebelling, no one is going to root for them because they shouldn't exist. Simple points really, but something very hard to do, especially since you will almost always be trying to rebel against Celestia and Luna, characters we love.
Random Dark
What do I mean? I mean random acts of darkness or villainy, where the dark comes simply because of how a main character is, not so much what the overall story is about. I don't have a lot of experience with this personally, but I would imagine that most stories with Pinkamena as a main character are dark if not just because she is a chaotic psychopathic killer. It is hard to get around that part of darkness. Honestly, Responsibilities wasn't originally dark, but things I wanted Mark to do and his role in the story as himself propelled it there.
Slavery
This is what inspired this whole blog post because I've talked about it twice now in my skype group. What caused us to talk about it? Someone brought up Fall of Equestria. This upset me. Why? Because one of my friends said it was clop for clop and I saw Bruised Apples (another Fall of Equestria story) first. I thought to myself "There is no way something that has pushed such a grand change to the universe can be just for clop." However, from what I can tell from the description, length, and comments on the first story, this isn't really what happened. It was just suddenly: Caribou are within Equestria, a big part of Equestria, and have enough power to overthrow Celestia and control EVERYONE! That is bad as a story idea, but the Caribou forcing mares into sex is bad in a slave story perspective (in my opinion).
Why?
It is simple. Slavery, the ultimate obedient girl doing whatever we can think of, that idea is HOT! However, it needs to be forbidden. If its not, then it just becomes "Sleep with me!"
"I don't wa-"
"You have to!"
"Okay."
"Now stay there." And that is bad story telling, especially if slave story is the route you're going. Why do I give other stories that possibly do this a pass and not FoE? It is simply because it is such a grand scale. If you want to change all of Equestria like this, make that the story! Not how one girl gets broken and have the caribou takeover a side note, make it a rebellion too. Even in random slave fics, if I were told that the girl was fucking the guy because the law said so and no one would bat an eye, I would start screaming! It takes away that forbidden factor and simply makes it forced sex, seeing as you could literally go to the next girl and sleep with her. That takes out the purpose of slave. so just make the girl a slut or masochist and make it a clop fic, but don't make it dark when it is accepted. That is part of the dark tag, that people won't approve of it.
Final Point
I'm probably going to get shot because of this, but that last one is not the only one of the three I haven't legitimately done, but is also one I have given a lot of thought to. So, what would you guys say to a possible slave fic? It would never be my main focus, and I don't know if I would actually do it, but would it be one step too far, so you think I couldn't do it, or do you simply is a genre that shouldn't be done. Like I said, it wouldn't be my focus, and probably won't happen for a while anyways, but I thought I'd ask you all. Also, I could probably never go full BDSM, so mainly mental breaking would be showcased, not physical breaking.

Most of my assumptions are from what I have been told and what I have read fi descriptions and comments) put it in the comments or PM me. Thing is, that will not be explained at the beginning. I don't explain everything from the beginning as I like to let the reader have fun.
As for everything ells on this blog, it makes sense. I'm still reading through it though.
2307620 It isn't bad to leave things unexplained. However the event described was the crucial part of PINKIE'S debate for revolution. No one knew about it though, and in no way did it affect them then. It could have irked them, and given time led to revolution, but it went instant unicorn execution because of it. So yeah, bad.
