In about 24-48 hours, I will be closing this tab and never opening it again. After six years I'm finally leaving and it's a very... bittersweet goodbye.
I'll start with the immediate good, then go to why I'm leaving, and then to final thanks to what this place has done for me. The immediate good is that I finished one, final story here. Pausing the Game is not only the final thing I will be releasing/finishing here, but it's a special story to me. It makes me think of A Gamer's Journal where the story should be nothing but smut but it comes together to be more than just that. That's also why, along with the conversion not being a nightmare, that everywhere but here it's Fanfiction posing as Original Fiction. Think of 50 Shades of Grey but... hopefully good. So, it would mean a lot to me if you not only checked out the story here, but considered buying it on Amazon. Because yes, I need to do some final shills or it wouldn't be me.
Now for the sad part. I haven't posted in a good while outside of Pausing the Game because for probably at least the past year it has hurt to post here. It makes my anxiety spike, the comments often make me angry, and a day that should have and could have been will be ruined, even by positive responses to a story. Trying to post blogs for the past two months has caused short term loss of breath from how hard my anxiety spiked. If not for long term planning on this blog, I probably wouldn't be able to do it. But I didn't just want to disappear on all of you. Not without a final explanation.
Now, before I go to the thanks to this website, two pieces of advice. One, if you want to keep authors around, talk about what a story has, and not what a story doesn't have. Every story I made that I decided at the end that it would be more personal and meaningful to not have sex in it, I knew there would be half a dozen comments asking for it. Nothing about the story, but just questioning when a second chapter would be coming for the obvious sex scene that wouldn't have the emotion of the rest of the story properly backing it.
The other is one that has tortured me for almost the entirety of my career here. "What could be wrong? You have X amount of followers!" Followers don't mean jack. Jack even left the state and is on their way to Zimbabwe for how little it means to him. After all, how many of you have a hundred people you follow? Two hundred? Five hundred? Not to mention the amount of groups. At that point, your feed means effectively nothing. One author is no different from another most of the time, and for me, someone who hasn't had a consistent genre until my original works (where I mostly do harem erotica), I get those sorts of people for EVERYTHING that exists on the website. I have almost 1500 and it leads usually to no comments on my blogs unless I'm scared in some way.
But, I want to finish this on the positive. Without this site and all of you, I'd have never properly begun writing. Without editors and feedback, I wouldn't have become able to write at the level I do or be the best editor I know. I would never have become an original writer if not for the confidence I gained in my ideas. I would have never grown as a person if it weren't for the explosions that happened in my face between me and other authors and Skype groups. I wouldn't have had anyone in some of the darkest times in my life. I wouldn't have any friends anymore outside of my family.
Everything here has changed my life in so many ways that mean so much to me but those ways have stopped being good for me a long time ago and I need to recognize when something is toxic in my life and cut it out. I have been publishing on Ao3 but that has been hard to put anything on it either. Not because I have nothing to post but just because I hate posting this stuff anymore. So, at least for a while, I think any fanfiction I write is just going to be for me.
And final things to say is that if you want to stay with me, especially for my original stuff or shenanigans I do going forward, I have a new, PROPER Discord to join that I will try to actually post on, I have my Twitch of course which I hope to really kick up in speed when I get my own space in a month or two, and there will always be my original works that won't be going anywhere. Having heard most of the discussion of why you're leaving, I understand why you are. I'll miss you here, but wish you luck in the future.
Good luck with the original fiction writing, sad to see you go though. We are losing so many good writers now and it is getting disconcerting with the lack of new ones.
