Analysis and Review: Tales From the Phoenix Empire by Chengar Qordath · 4:42am Jul 11th, 2014

Genres

Slice of Life: The story tries to explain how the character we know and love some much live in the absence of Celestia.

Alternate Universe: In this world Celestia is dead, Equestria is ruled by her “successor” Sunbeam Sparkle, the self proclaimed Phoenix Empress the pragmatic and sometimes cruel alicorn.

Adventure: The is a super hero, eventually there will be some of this…. I hope.

Rating

Teen… with lots of hormones.

Story Synopsis

These are the stories for the inhabitants of Equestria under the rule of the Phoenix Empress, we will see many familiar faces in completely different situations, and a treat that is slowly rising.

Narrative

The narrative is good with special focus on the what and how the characters are feeling. Written from the point of view of the character that is narrating the event.

Structure

It’s a bit early to call on the structure, for the moment, it seems these are the events previous to the return of Nightmare Moon.

But what it is interesting from the story is the role the Phoenix Empress plays. The character was first introduced in The Lunar Rebellion by the same author of this story, and turned into an alicorn in Rise of the Phoenix Empress. The character by definition is a constant conflict between reason and emotion, sometimes cruel and insensible and sometimes motherly and protective. She will no doubt to use lethal force if she has too, but it will definitely not be her first option.

Technical

On the technical side is good, with no mayor grammar or redaction errors. But incorrectly using the italics format for thought and whispers.

Story Tags

Good Narrative: With abundant description on emotions a personal thought without being too hard to read.

Part of a Series: Technically this story belongs to the “Winningverse”, but it can easily be it’s own universe, the story is enjoyable as a standalone, but it has a full impact when you read first The Lunar Rebellion and Rise of the Phoenix Empress..

Personal Opinion

The story is barely starting and already got me all hyped, I enjoyed a lot Sunbeam Sparkle and how the character are taking place in some kind of plan. The ambivalence of the Phoenix Empress makes it hard to devise the future, hopefully this will not be a short story. Because the premise is very good (But not easily explained).
