    Short Reviews: The Substitute Demon

Chapters Completed: 16 of 85 (Still reading, so concerns in the review may be solved by later chapters)

TL;DR - 6 out of 10. Pretty ok, but the main character is severely lacking and is never really challenged.

Not Dead Blog - Preview Post of New Story

Checking in to say I'm not dead (even though I already made a blog post like, a few days ago).

Here's to me not being dead. In the meanwhile, enjoy a small blurb of a rough draft of a new story I'm working on.

Dust blinked once, choosing to center his attention to the more sensible mare. “I don’t get it.”

Chronicles of an Unknown World: Prologue Updated · 2:47am May 16th, 2014

Holy crap, it's back!

After a year of waiting, I'm finally willing to work on my most popular story again! And after 5 hours of work extended along 4 months, I'm finally done editing the Prologue to my liking!

If you haven't noticed, Chronicles is a story I started writing Three Years Ago, and three years ago I sucked at writing. Well, now that I've gotten a lot smarter about concepts such as character, setting, theme and 'show, don't tell', I'm finding that my earlier chapters are not only crappy, but really, really terribad! Like, so terribad the chapters have a chance to be found on fanfiction.net! And that would be a very horrible fate!

So now, one of the goals on my to-do list of Chronicles is to re-write/edit the first four chapters of the story. Of course, looking back on my track record for the amount of time it takes for me to systematically go through one of my older works, catch all the typos, catch all the OOC moments and catch all the pacing issues takes a long period of time. A very long period of time. And frankly, I hate it. But this is something I feel has to be done in order to garner more views, in order to get better rating and a in order to make myself feel more self-fulfilled about a story that I've been working on for Three Mother@#$!%#! Years.

Fixing up the Prologue, for me, is a very important first step. Reading through the chapter has refreshed my memory of what actually goes on in the story, what I wanted to portray to the reader originally and gives me perspective on elements that I wanted to make important and felt that were important for the reader to understand. Will all this in mind, hopefully re-writing Chapter 1 is going to be easier. Yes, I'm re-writing Chapter 1. Because unlike the Prologue, which was a very heavy edit, Chapter 1 needs more damage control because it sucks. Yes, it sucks. Twilight and her friends don't act like they're supposed too, a lot of the dialogue is forced and I felt the need to add a stereotypical dream sequence between Twilight and Griffin just to act as a convenient plot point, which is not good at all. One of my main goals while writing Chronicles was to not fall into HiE cliches such as boring and dull characters, prophecies, the human turning into a pony and a happy-go-lucky theme just like the show had. Instead of doing this, I make not one, not two, but Three sequences that have no reason to belong to the actual story! They're moot! They're garbage, and I need to remove them asap! The fact that the first chapter has a large part containing a dream sequence forces me to actually take apart the chapter bit by bit and re-write it all together. And that's bad. But it's necessary.

So what else do I have planned for Chronicles? Well, for one, I'm developing more into the cover image. I made that cover image Four Years Ago, but only recently have I actually cleaned it up and added colour, details and a bit of shading to it. I want to add the Ponyville background in a thunderstorm with the black hole in the sky, have Griffin be standing on a hill an change his stance a little as well as his expression to reflect the mood of the story a bit better. Also, I'm writing new 'intermissions' to take place in-between chapters to describe what the princesses have been doing during the entire debacle. Because frankly, I completely forgot about them while writing and implementing the plot and only until very late into writing did I realize that I had to put them in Somewhere. So, I found a way to shove them into the last chapter lazily and said "Good enough" That was back when I wasn't a good problem solver. That was back when I couldn't think up of a way to get around the issue because that was not how my brain worked. But now, Three Years after I brainstormed the plot for the story I actually thought up a interesting way to tell the story from the princesses' perspectives and mix up the content of the story every once in a while. It'll work, that's for certain, and I'm working on it right now so be expecting little 1-2 thousand word pieces in the next coming weeks.

I swear to god, I'll finish this story this year.

Oh, and one more thing: I've always wanted to add Spike to the first chapter, but I completely forgot about him after taking two months to write the damned thing. But now, I have the chance to add him in. Yay!

P.S. You should really re-read the Prologue, by-the-by. It's cleaned up so well and you might find that you like re-reading content that you haven't seen in three years. Just maybe.
