Twilight left for an official trip with Princess Celestia, leaving Rainbow Dash at home, utterly heartbroken. She would be gone for a full month, and all that she left for her pegasus was a magical stone, wielding a spell that can be used only once.

A bit of 'Shards', the sequel to 'The Amethyst' · 12:45am May 7th, 2014

The light was still dim in the library as Rainbow followed in the alicorn's steps up to the familiar bedroom, and though she felt apprehensive about going into her mare's personal space, decided that it was all for the best. The door swung loosely on its hinges as she pushed it open with a light nudge, and she was relieved to see her princess sitting in front of the fireplace, her forelegs and back legs curled neatly underneath her. She was staring into the undulating flame, forlorn and tense, yet calm. To Rainbow, she was no doubt locked in unquestionably deep thought, but that wasn't about to stop her from trying to say anything.

The pegasus found a quaint spot next to her on the wooden floor, and her mare only offered but a quick glance in her direction before turning back to the new fire. All was quiet for a few moments, but Rainbow was quick about breaking it. She never cared for heavy silences between them, and they loved each other, after all.

"So," she began, struggling to come up with the next part. "You know I missed you, right?"

Twilight craned her neck back, possibly to work out a kink, then placidly turned to her pegasus. Rainbow's cheek was still upturned, uncertain and anxious, but it was clear the princess was being pacified simply by her presence. Twilight placed a hoof over hers and gave it a delicate rub, offering her disquieted mare a second of respite and comfort, and a warm smile to match.

"Yeah," acknowledged Twilight. "I missed you too; believe me on that one."

Rainbow allowed her hoof to turn and cradle Twilight's in its crook, then planted a quick, fleeting kiss on her upper cheekbone. As she pulled away, the alicorn could sense something was still amiss in the heart of the pegasus.

"That's good," Rainbow admitted, almost sounding dejected. "You just kinda' went off without saying much, and I wasn't about to let you mope around on your first day back."

Twilight gave her eyes a quick roll. "I suppose that is kind of unbecoming, but I've just been having a rough time lately. That's all."

"Hmph! I bet!" the pegasus chirped. "With all that responsibility hanging over you, it's no wonder you're a little 'burned out'."

"Still," Twilight began to look away at something unseen, somewhere near the fire. "What I said downstairs wasn't fair to you or Spike. I think it's a little ironic, to be quite honest. Sometimes, I worry that I'll come off as somepony who is full of herself because of her title, and that's the exact opposite of what I want. So... I've tried to overcompensate on some occasions, and I feel like I come off as more arrogant because of it."

"Woah," Rainbow clasped Twilight's hoof between hers. "You're thinking over this way-y-y too much. We all love you, Twilight, especially me." A slight smile began to break over the alicorn's features, and she continued. "Everyone's got a tough job now and then, and while yours may be special, we like to show our appreciation for you whether or not it truly is. We wouldn't care if you were a plumber, or something lame like that. We'd still think you were special— even though sometimes you act like you're just a plumber."

Twilight laughed under her breath and turned to the fire once more; her smile remained intact.

"And here I am..." she started lowly, "... thinking that I was actually the one who always knew what to say."

"Hey," Rainbow tapped the hard part of Twilight's hoof with an audible 'clop' noise, fetching her attention. "It's not that I always know what to say. It's just that not too many other ponies can read you like a book like I can, and I might say I do a pretty dang good job of that."

Rather suddenly, Twilight leaned into her mare for a deep and full kiss, to which Rainbow was admittedly surprised. They closed their eyes and held the exchange for a good few seconds... before letting their tongues depart from the embrace of one another. Rainbow took a deep breath, as their eyes met longingly yet again.

Twilight playfully smirked. "Didn't read that, did ya?"

Any comments? Or mistakes to correct?

"...she felt apprehensive about going into her mare's personal space..."

I'm assuming that the apprehension has more to do with whatever was said downstairs, since I can't see Rainbow being that apprehensive about going in her room given her personality and how close the relationship obviously is. Beyond that I didn't see anything that jumped out at me. Looking forward to getting to read the full thing.
