Chapter 20 is out. And a Quick Question. · 8:37pm May 4th, 2014
So, chapter 20 of AHoC is finally out. I want to thank everyone who decided to help proofread for me. And a special thanks to Mac349 for devoting so much time to pointing out my numerous errors and being so articulate about each one. It has been a while since I've felt so profoundly stripped of my confidence as an author (the last time I felt like this was when I first started writing). This is a good thing though, as it means I am finally able to see with much more clarity, just how much I need to improve. This whole experience has renewed my vigor and given me direction for improving my writing.
Now for the question. I feel like writing a blog about writing, but I'm not too sure on what aspect to focus on. Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks for reading,
~SilentBelle
Possibly common pitfalls and bad habits both new and seasoned writers lean towards?
2077062 Hmm, I could talk about my own habits, but I think everyone has different pitfalls and such. This is a question that would be better answered by a seasoned proofreader or editor--which I am not. I am not sure how effective I would be in creating a blog about that. Maybe if I found a number of different writers to share some of their own particular troubles and pitfalls with writing, that could be interesting. I'll consider this further.
I'd like to see a brief bit on how you turn ideas in your head to words on the page. I've been trying to figure that part out myself, but no real luck. The more examples I see, the more likely I feel I'll succeed in getting something down that people can throw rotten fruit at.
2077093 Ooh, this sounds like it would be a lot of fun to write.
Sorry that I wasn't able to help as much as I wanted too, I only had time to scan the first quarter, and then when I came back to actually read it everyone had beat me there and there was practically nothing left that I could point out at my current level of ability, haha.
Well, the one thing related to writing that I'm currently most interested in reading about is how to give characters distinct "voices", specially if tailored to fan fiction (i.e., identifying and using the character's already existing voice). I'm (slowly) trying to compile a pile of information on the voices of the show characters by myself, and I could really use some hints on how to collect, organize, and use that information to make my characters sound correct.
Perhaps you could talk about what makes a good and compelling conflict.
The English language seems to be commonly said to be difficult to understand. Perhaps you could come up with a way to enlighten us with how the differences between the American and European standards create variances in how you approach writing in general?
You could talk about how to avoid making a story feel rushed.
You could write primarily about your specific writing style and the method you take from start to finish on a story/chapter. From there you could branch out into other types of blog posts.
