Stuck In Equestria Extra: A Nuclear Reactor In Every Basement · 5:34pm Apr 5th, 2014
This post explains about the crystal that powers the library in the main story. Extra special thanks to Midi, who questioned its existence, and to be honest, I should've explained it better. Sorry guys.
"So Twilight, there's something I've been meaning to ask you," I said from my comfy position in an armchair in the private study area of the library, three days after the news Princess Celestia was working on making black gold turn into real gold (i.e: oil to gasoline).
"Mmmhmm?" Twilight herself was currently engrossed in her notes she had made about what I had told her about the DeLorean, and cars in general; probably cramming it into a report for the Princess.
"A day or two before the Summer Sun Celebration, when you first came to town and we saw each other in the library, me and Vinyl ended up in the basement of the library. Back when it didn't have a basement, or any visible way of reaching it." Twilight's ears pricked up at this and she turned to face me.
"Was there anything down there?" She asked in curiosity.
"Yeah, this weird crystal thing that had apparently ran out of juice, and needed zapping to bring it to life, I think. Vinyl didn't really explain it all that well," I explained, whilst Twilight listened intently.
"Ah, you must mean the library's magic source! It must've really dried out if it needed a jump start from a Unicorn," Twilight said.
"Yeah, that's what Rarity said too. Vinyl managed to do it though. But I still don't understand how it keeps this place clean and powering the lights. Hell, it even made all the books in the library appear out of thin air!" I wave my hand at the bookshelf to Twilight's left, which used to be an empty, mouldy bookshelf upon my first arrival to the library.
"I take it you don't have something like that?" She asked.
"Definitely not. Back home, my house is connected to a regional power source that many other houses and building share. Same with water too," I explain, as Twilight quickly made note of this.
"Then I'll try to dumb it down for you, since the proper explanation is a bit on the heavy side of advanced magical enchantments."
"Gee, thanks." Twilight rolled her eyes at my sarcasm, before pressing with her explanation.
"Each house in Equestria has a crystal somewhere either in or below it, full of magic. Now, this crystal could essentially be abbreviated as the heart of a building, since it gives it warmth, light, water, etc. Sometimes, these crystals run low on power, and need to be enriched again. Any Unicorn can do that, but it takes one of extra-ordinary power to fully rejuvenate a crystal once it dries out," she explained.
"Okay, I get that, but what about the books appearing out of nowhere? And what about the condition the library was in? No matter how hard I tried to clean it, the grime and dirt just kept returning," I asked. Twilight pondered this for a moment.
"Ah, the books were protected by the crystal." Seeing the confused look on my face, she elaborated. "Some crystals are able to protect certain items, like books for example. So in any case of a fire, or say the magic of the crystal drying out, they would absorb the matter the books are made out of and store it inside the crystal. They would then be rematerialized when the crystal's power was rejuvenated. As for the dirt and grime, that's just something that happens to areas that lose their magic, like buildings just lost their purity and that's what's left. There's still a lot of things we don't know about magic, and that just happens to be one of them."
"Ah, I think I get it. It's like a power plant and a water works, but with an ability to teleport certain things to safety and back (like the Transporters from Star Trek), whilst keeping bad stuff at bay." I nod in understanding. "But what about the food that was in the fridge after I met you? Did the crystal do that too?"
"Declan, I bought that food. You saw me go out and get some after I explained to you about Nightmare Moon's imminent return!"
"Oh yeah... I forgot about that."
"And besides, the molecular structure of food is too complex to be generated. Even if it was stored in the crystal for weeks, then rematerialized, it would still age. That's why only non-organic items, like books, can be stored, because an object stored in a crystal still ages. That's why they aren't used to store living things, its impractical." At that moment, Twilight's stomach decided to make a loud grumbling sound. "Heh, it seems that talking about food has made me hungry. Shall we get lunch?" I nod in agreement, as my own stomach gurgled.
"Sound's like a plan!"
Books are made out of paper which comes from trees which are organic. Though I think what you mean is something that won't age rapidly like food.
Not really like a nuclear reactor so much as a simple generator. As a nuclear reactor, even a small one, would generate significantly more power than what a single household is going to use.

Ehh, you win on the paper front. I might change it.
But the title stays. It stands out and makes people read my blog posts.
... no one ever reads my blog posts...
1983932 Eh, it is more of an eye catcher than to just say "the explanation of the house crystals" or something. My laptop broke and my tablet isn't good for long rants.
