I just don't get the featured box sometimes... it seems that only half of it is ever full of real stories. It's always just full of smut, all out porn, joke stories and stories that just don't take themselves seriously at all. I kinda miss the old 3 story box, it actually had amazing stories there all the time and getting one of your stories on there was worth a hell of a lot more...
If only there were ways to filter the featured box other than mature rating

I will be completely honest with you, I just got featured for one chapter that had barely anything on just 200 view with barely anything, I wont put my work down but it definitely didn't deserve to be featured... its a very weird system
1932574 lol congrats, and I'm pretty sure it works on an equation of time by likes. Stories tend to be featured on their first or second chapter- depending on how fast the second is uploaded- because that one chapter accumulates those 200 likes in a few hours. I've had three or four stories featured, and they were all around 200-300, though the sun and her little sparkle was anything between that and 700 because in the seven hours of sleep I had gotten after posting it that's how many it had...
But I digress. Either way, I kinda miss when features were either picked by moderators or the prerequisites of the system in place were far stricter- whichever one it was for the original three spot box.
I don't think its a matter of change in the script but instead of what kind of stories get published. To be entirely honest, a good story hasn't been published in months on this site. Updates sure, but... I digress, the script may have a small blame but it isn't the only problem.
I don't completely agree with you, in that the featured box is half full of smut and joke stories. The featured box gets great stories all the time, but that's also just my opinion. I agree vehemently that the filter system needs some work done to it. The ability to filter pointless-porn from stories that don't completely revolve around it, would be a great start. The featured box also has the potential (if it's using an algorithm based on amount of time elapsed and view/likes) for power users to dominate the box.
1932668 correction, you haven't found a good story in a while. there's always good stories being published, possibly even daily. the chance we see them or think they're good at first glance are slim to none, though. that's what the featured box is supposed to be for, but instead it's not even the patterns, it's the fact that people fill stories with likes that really don't deserve the box
1933319 Okay, maybe I was a little harsh when it came to giving definites to what I said. On point though, I could have said the problem was the readership and it would have boiled down to the same thing. Maybe no one should have the power to decide the featured box and it just highlights ten random stories? Do you think that would have the chance to highlight the better ones?
1933342 The system is fine as it is, it's the filters the systems use and the prerequisites. It does what it's supposed to do, features currently popular stories. it's just that half of the currently popular stories aren't really stories, which is fine because a lot of people like that, but it takes away from the people who put a lot of time and effort into their stories. Making it just 7 random stories (not 10 because the last three slots aren't featured stories but instead featured updates) would make that even more so. instead of seeing stories with 20 likes and 5 dislikes you'd see stories with 50 likes and 300 dislikes. The featured box rides on quick popularity, it would be impossible to detect if a story is actually good other than how much people like it.
Hell, I've been featured three or four times so that's just a testament to how iffy the featured box is... All of my stories that have been featured have, as usual, been incredibly incomplete ideas with nothing but a concept that managed to catch a lot of people's attention for reasons unbeknownst to me
