Why Maude Pie?

Okay, somebody needs to help me here.

What is the raison d'etre for Maude Pie? The character, that is. Why is there another Pie sister? I realise she was a character in one of the novels, but why did that story need another sister? Why is the show running with it? I have no doubt tomorrow's episode will be good, and Maude will be a welcome addition to the cast, but I really want to know why.

Anybody?

I've been avoiding spoilers, so this might not make sense as it's coming from an out-of-context viewpoint, but: When it comes to creative types I think reasons often come second to whatever ideas are being hashed out. We've seen some really weird things in the show. Maybe some of the writers take creative inspiration from Pinkie Pie?

I like this explanation though.
