Reactions to Rainbow Falls · 10:06pm Jan 18th, 2014
(Spoilers ahead, as if you'd be reading this otherwise)
Okay, wow. That was a LOT better than I thought it was going to be, and not just because Derpy Hooves returns (I love you Derpy!) I honestly had Rainbow Falls pegged as another "Rainbow Dash is an obnoxious glory-hound" episode, but I'm glad it turned out to be more balanced than that. Anyway, here're my immediate thoughts on some of the little things we saw:
One: Bulk Biceps? I mean, cool name, bro, but do they have to say the whole thing every time? It's just a bit jarring is all. Personally, I will be content to call him "Bulkie", and imagine he likes to think of himself as "a winner" and "genetically different".
Two: Apparently Equestria has a griffon team. Neat little touch there. I'm not particularly into the whole griffon thing, but it's still a good bit of world-building. And all in the background too, nice.
Three: Holy crap, Applejack, really pushing those apple brown-betties aren't you? Maybe give somepony a heads up before you hurl pastries at them? And you, Rarity, have you ever even seen an athletic uniform?! I would've expected that kind of tacky stuff from Fluttershy or Twilight, but you? For shame!
Four: As awesome as Derpy's comeback was, it does raise the question of why she wouldn't be on the relay team to begin with. She's a Ponyville resident, and she's clearly not on any other teams, otherwise she wouldn't be able to substitute in the first place. So again, why wasn't she on the initial team? You mean to tell me that a girl who (fanonically) runs packages for a living and (canonically) is apparently good enough to enter the Best Young Fliers Competition can't outfly Fluttershy or a steroid junkie? (Don't even try to argue, we all know that's what he is.) Suppose it doesn't really matter. Go Derpy!
Five: The Wonderbolts. Wow, just... wow. They've had their grey moments in the past, but this time they were definitely not cool. Kind of a neat change of pace from that pedestal that Dash has them up on. Also, good to see that Fleetfoot recovered from her concussion!
And that's all I've got. Hit the comments if you feel like fanning the flames!
I agree with all your statements! (Save Four, but that is, well, ).
Definitely a very enjoyable episode. World-building, cool imagery, laughs (Bulkie was constantly amusing), and an interesting character development. I like that Twilight elected to allow Rainbow Dash to make the decisions on her own. It seemed, to me, like what a princess would do. Makes me proud of Twi.
Also, Derpy! Ermahgerd!
What you got against #4?
