I understand that because there are such a surplus of female characters to male characters, there are gonna be some ponies that are gay--male and female.
My peeve, if you will is this: Why does it seem like the majority of our fandom want to see the main characters as gay?? Rainbow Dash, I can understand. Her tomboyish personality, not to mention a natural-borne rainbow mane; kinda makes the vast majority show her as a lesbian. I sure as hell would not be surprised that Twilight eventually shows up as one as well, but that seems to be seriously if not permanently bonked because of Equestria Girls, and the blatant ship tease of Twilight Sparkle and Flash Sentry (or Brad, as we have called him before knowing his true name). While on the other side of the spectrum, Rarity is probably the only pony other than Shining Armor and Cadence (duh :ajcrazy:) and the Cakes (another :ajcrazy:) that has canonically shown up that she is straight. Her fantasies of wanting to woo a prince or at least a high-ranking Canterlot pony is so transparent that I'm also waiting for the episode where potentially there is gonna be another pony (stallion, honestly) that gives Rarity a double-look at. Fandom be prepared: Sparity will probably be broken in that episode, despite the writers saying that they love the interaction between the dragon and the unicorn.
So that leaves three ponies there that their sexuality is questioned: Fluttershy, Applejack, and Pinkie Pie. I'm pretty sure that Applejack is as straight as a barn door (heheheh heh heh), because of tradition. And tradition means: one mare, one stallion. or in general, one male and one female. Pinkie is anyone's guess: I could see her easily as probably the only blatant bisexual in all of Ponyville, not just their clique. Why else would she be all into ponies' smiles and happiness, regardless of the pony? And Fluttershy? Surprised it to say, I honestly don't know. I just sincerely don't. There's absolutely nothing that points the mare with butterflies as a cutie mark as having which way she prefers. On a related note, stop shipping FlutterMac. It's getting really old, there's really no sense or logic to it, and why is it so prevalant even now?
Is it really better that the main characters ship with each other? That seems to me that it would get stale really quickly. The six of them are already really close friends, and as such, probably know more about each other than maybe their own families would. Yes, they all have their different strengths and weaknesses that remarkably seem to match each other perfectly. I just feel that the best way for each of the characters to deepen emotionally is for each one of them to find people that are not in their collective cliques. Have creatures that are friends with a particular pony, but not necessarily friends with all of the main 6 characters. Then at that point, there's really something between two main characters, then ship, ship, ship away!!! SHip to your heart's content!!!!
Sorry, rant over.....
I'll drink to that, my good sir!
