Only in the South · 9:58pm Nov 22nd, 2013
Hello again, FiMFic. Normally I wouldn't post a blog about minor occurrences in my everyday life, but I simply could not resist sharing this. So, I was picking up my brothers and a couple of their friends after school so they could come over for their 18th birthday. Everyone had just taken a seat in my car, and I was just about to pull out when suddenly a van comes barreling around the corner, dried mud all over its sides, and I quickly slammed my brakes. I was going to use my horn, since I could clearly see that the driver and his friend were a pair of teenagers, likely and if they kept driving like that they were going to end up in an accident, but decided against it. Everyone makes mistakes after all; I was pulled over for speeding yesterday myself. But then I saw the rear of their vehicle:
This needs to be on a postcard. "Greetings from South Carolina!"
Would you guys mind if I moved to Germany?
I actually dislike people ho are overzealous about their country. I mean, I'm all for loving my country. But it's the overzealous ones that hold us back from expanding and learning from others.
Needs moar flag. I can't tell where they're from.
1530356 A certain quote comes to mind:
There's nothing wrong with a little patriotism. It's when it gets to the point where you refuse to accept that your nation or state has done or can do anything wrong that it becomes detrimental. People here in the United States do actually have a fair amount to be proud of, as when the nation initially gained independence it was among one of if not the most libertarian countries of its time. The problem is, even then there were many areas where it was in drastic need of improvement by modern standards, some that we've addressed throughout our history, and some that we're still debating to this day. The same can no longer be said of the modern day United States.
I'm not trying to condemn anyone who chooses to purchase a Confederate flag, but I will say I find it disturbing that so many people here in the South take such pride in that particular part of our history.
1530401 They must be Canadians.
1530442 I hav'ta agree. I too, live in the south. However, I can care less about my history or the history of America in general. It to me seems boring and plain. Granted with only 220 years or so of history it can't be helped. But I love Japanese, Greek history etc. because there's so much mythology and history to go over. It's just the way it is for me. But I still find my country to have some of the most beautiful landscapes ever created. But whatever, it's just a single persons opinion.
1531778 I have something of a fascination with history, myself. That being said, I lost interest in American history after it was repeatedly discussed throughout grade school. I have more of an interest in ancient and medieval world history, myself.
1533210 Medieval Europe would have been an interesting time to live. I mean, being a knight was second only to the king himself in terms of status. Plus I personally believe I would have made a great knight with my virtues and ideals. Plus how epic would it be to have a cliche rescue the beautiful princess scene then getting to marry her etc. Lol
I wouldn't mind at all, you can come to Germany and I invite you on some german beer made after the Reinheitsgesetz, the purity law.^^
1533806 Ausgezeichnit! I'll be over shortly!
On a side not, my new charger should be arriving next week, (finally) so I should be available to edit again; not to mention get back to work on my own writing.
1533682 The fantasy equivalent is definitely a good deal more palatable than the truth. That being said, it wasn't quite as bad as everyone makes it out to be these days, either. Still, think I'll stick with the modern era.

And I'm still sitting on my two unfinished fics after all dem weeks. I'm a shitty fanfic-author without a deadline to worry my head off, it seems.
1534041 I have to agree... I love my internet. Lol

1545054 I can answer those questions for you:
1. I don't suppose you saw Season 3's closing episode? If you didn't, minor spoiler warning, but in the episode Twilight has to determine why her friends' cutie-marks have been exchanged and the above image was directly inspired by a moment from the episode. It seemed appropriate given my avatar.
2. There was indeed a joke there, the joke being that I was implying I wanted to get out of the United States. While I do intend to visit Germany at some point (ancestral ties and curiosity, in case you're wondering) I don't necessarily hate America.
Find this dumbass and educate him/her on history. This particular symbol was never a flag of the Confederate States of America (which got three). This was used by a fighter squadron in world war 2.
1609289 You know, it's really sad that education here is so faulty that this is widely believed to be the actual Confederate flag.
1609650 They never talked about it in my school. It's the internet that taught me that.
1609712 That's kind of my point. It's a pretty sad state of affairs when a country can't be expected to reliably teach its own history. Here in America, it seems as though there's more interest in idealizing our nation than giving whole and accurate information.
1610762 What other faulty information does that fall under? Ah yes! The books told us that the Revolution despized King George the First (or the third. I can never remember). That's not true. It was the parliamental party that they hated, as the royalty's powers were stripped fiercely prior after an uprising. It was even recorded that George Washington would often give a toast to the king at banquets.
There's also the false-fact of every single colonist rising against the king. That's not true. More than half the populace was still with the crown, making rebellious movements done in the shadows.
Also, have you ever heard that "The British are coming!" tale? That never happened, because, if you look at the prior paragraph, yelling that sentence was a bad idea. And the guy who was glorified in that tale? There were three of them, and the glorified idiot was the first to surrender the second he was caught in a bar. The other two fled to warn the rebellion about the incoming British troops.
I was also never taught that it was thanks to the French fleets blocking the Royal Navy and Spain supplying us with weapons that allowed the rebellion movement to carry on.
And then there's Benedict Arnold. Poor old Benedict Arnold...
