Was this subconscious intentional characterization, or a lapse in planning?

Honestly? Probably both. I do try to keep the characterizations as close to what I've made them as possible, but at the same time, the previous mentions of the above were in a story where it was mostly centered on Lyra and Bon-Bon (Rarity didn't fit into it). Only reason I thought about it now is because I'm writing a scene in the Christmas special where Rarity and Bon-Bon reminisce about something from their high school years and that's when it suddenly clicked.
Hmm, don't remember it ever being mentioned, though it has been a good while since I read the Lyra and Bonbon chapters.
...Damn, that's a pitch black bit of fridge logic.
Honestly, just when I can't think of a thing that makes your version of Rarity more of a nag for how she handled things...you spring something like this blog-post on us.
And the worst thing is that it actually makes perfect sense for her given the horrible situation.
The one thing she didn't want to be generous about... and even trying to keep her, cost Rarity all chances of Sandalwood ever returning.
I've actually started to cringe mentally slightly when her name comes up in your fics. She hit bedrock years ago, but she's just kept digging with her freaking teeth.
