I want you to know right away that I agree with you, in a sense. The attention is probably exactly what they want, and in a sense we are feeding. However, we are also showing how absolutely terrible and insane these people are in debate and intent when we discuss this with them, and they have no real defense. So while I think you're right, I myself don't subscribe to that notion.
And besides, when you confront these people with reason and actually point out the numerous flaws in their logic, it's not making yourself look bad. It's pointing out how terrible they are at everything. So long as we don't resort to pointless ad hominem, and instead use reason and wit, I'd say mockery is a safe way of doing things.
