    Beginnings and Endings.

Hello. I still, inexplicably, get attention here. Not sure why. I don't go on Fimfiction, or write ponyfics anymore--I do however, write original fiction, yay!--or really do anything pony related. Don't consider myself a brony, though ponies are always cute, and stuff.

Character analysis: Pinkie Pie, Part II. · 2:27am Nov 4th, 2013

Welcome to part II of my analysis blog! It's... 1:44 AM, which is... somewhat decent. Wait... 1:16 now. Yay for writing this in the middle of daylight savings! So, back onto topic of Pinkie's intelligence...

Pinkie Pie: What kind of welcome party would this be if it were quiet? I mean, duh, bo-ring. You see, I saw you when you first got here, remember? You were all, hello, and I was all, [gasp], remember? You see I never saw you before, and if I never saw you before that means you're new, 'cause I know every pony, and I mean every pony in Ponyville, and if you're new, then it meant you haven't met anyone yet, and if you haven't met anyone yet, you must not have any friends, and if you don't have any friends then you must be lonely, and that made me so sad, and I had an idea, and that's why I went [gasp], "I'll just throw a great big ginormous super-duper spectacular welcome party and invite everyone in Ponyville." See? And now you have lots and lots of friends!

Pinkie Pie is of an artistic nature. She creates song lyrics on the spot without hesitation or effort. Her memory as I've said before is impeccable. But she also retains the rather intense organizational skills required to create parties on an incredibly short notice. Which she does... relatively frequently. Of course, considering her every party is basically the same, it's not that difficult... after her first, anyway. No, what is difficult however: Invitations. Consider it, within a very, very short period of time, a couple hours at best. Pinkie has to cycle through and give everyone invitations for a party the same evening. We know this because of Party of One where she was shown running around, giving out invitations in person, rather then through the mail.

You may be curious as to what this has to do with her intelligence, but the point is made in the same episode when she chases Rainbow Dash.

Her skills aren't just limited to memory, but pattern recognition as well. She has absolutely no issue analyzing the behavior of Rainbow Dash and knowing where she'll be ahead of time. Only, as she states she knows everyone in Ponyville, including their names, faces, and other details, like birthdays, hobbies, etc. All off the top of her head. Which is to say, she memorized the lifestyle of every pony in Ponyville and at the drop of a hat can go "Roseluck? Yeah, at this point of the day she'll be at location X and in seventeen minutes she'll be relocating to location Y." And we know she has memorized everything about everypony and can effortlessly apply that to know where they will be in the future so she can hand out invitations or avoid them when planning surprise parties. Such an action is hardly impossible--a fair number of cultures in history have had people who's job was to do just that, because no internet, and all that--but it requires a fairly high intellect. One that would even rival Twilight's. She has mixed success however, with learning new things. Either jumping ahead and easily grasping and applying concepts--like in Equestria girls, for example--ahead of the rest of the cast, including Twilight.

Or she'll drag behind, not understanding the concepts leading up to being able to the current matter at hand. Which doesn't nessecarily leave her 'stupid' but, is a fault of her lifestyle and lack of proper education. Forcing her to delay her comprehension of certain subjects as she attempts to rapid-fire go through all the per-requesite concepts and information that is required, then ultimately losing interest before she gets all the way to the end and going off to get more fun.

But this leads me to my second point... "Pinkie-sense". It annoys me to ridiculous levels when it's insisted there's no possible way for it to work in any logical sense. I found just the opposite.

If we consider Faust's statement about Earth ponies...

Earth ponies were the original ponies to be featured in the My Little Pony toy line. According to Lauren Faust, Earth ponies have a special connection to nature, animals, and plants.

Yes, Lauren isn't working the show anymore, however... Pegasi have been creating tornadoes, manipulating clouds and such through all three seasons.

There's a few things to consider... namely, do all three races have varying levels of magic? We know unicorns do. But what about Pegasi and Earth Ponies? Rainbow Dash is able to make small tornadoes on her own. The 'best' fliers in Equestria all have trails when they fly that less powerful Pegasi lack.

But what of earth ponies?

In Over a Barrel, we see that it takes multiple earth ponies to buck trees. However the Apple family can buck them down with very little issue and with a very small amount of training, so could her friends. This implies that rather then extreme strength, Applejack's trees are much easier to buck. Even her friends could do it with no issue, after being shown how--through implication.

However, in Pinkie's addled state in Magical Mystery Cure when she tried applebucking with her memories of that event gone...

Despite being a fairly strong pony--she pinned down Rainbow Dash with no issue in Party of One--she couldn't manage to buck a single tree. There's a bit of an implication: Earth pony magic is passive, but it's part of the pony nevertheless--just like it is for Pegasi--and as such it intermingles with other portions of the pony. Applejack can plant and raise incredible trees, but she also has the enhanced instincts to just casually look at a tree and know exactly where she needs to hit it to make every apple fall without using much force or hurting herself.

Which applebuckers from Appleloosa could not do. As such, we know that differing levels of magic between earth ponies exist.

Pinkie Pie: The twitchin' means my Pinkie Sense is telling me that stuff's gonna start falling! You should better duck for cover.
Twilight Sparkle: Oh, Pinkie, it's not gonna rain. Why there's barely even a cloud in the-ugh!
[frog croaks]
Pinkie Pie: He just said "nice catch" in Frog.
[frog croaks]

Pinkie said herself that she can't predict the future with 'Pinkie-sense', only detect immediate events--something most of the fandom tends to forget...--which is fine-tuned into muscle spasms, and odd sensations. Now, if we consider her skills at memory, pattern recognition, behavior prediction, all of which is oh so very natural... Pinkie Sense is her magic building that up further, using that information and wiring it into her body faster then she'd normally be able to comprehend it. When it chooses to activate anyway, which is much like Pinkie herself... impulsive, with a short attention span.

Equestria itself seems to be infused with magic--aka animation errors--Mountains, homes and terrain will change on the fly. There one moment, then gone the next. Weather doesn't work normally and requires Pegasus intervention. Physics, are drastically different. Ponies like Twilight tend to say Pinkie's antics are impossible, but not to long ago, a lot of the world's brightest minds would say the same about modern technology. Pinkie Pie invents things, flying machines, and such--she didn't make the party cannon though...--which implies a greater understanding of Equestria's physics then the average pony.

Intermingled with her passive magic, Pinkie's fourth wall breaking and 'physics abuse' are quite simply her incredibly deep understanding of Equestria's physics, along with her innate earth pony magic. She worked in a rock farm, not an apple orchard, after all. As such, her--very powerful--earth pony magic allows her to communicate with animals, allow 'pinkie-sense', and bend the magic-laden rules of physics that governs Equestria. In much the same way that Pegasi bend the nature of the weather.

Pinkie Pie, while initially insanely self-absorbed, has matured in a similar way to Twilight, becoming less apathetic--though it's still an issue for both of them--she's still rooted in her old methods and enjoys making herself happy. But as time passed, she has shown an ability to recognize that some friends need to be treated differently--A friend in deed--and methods that makes her happy doesn't nessecarily work. Though she still prefers being involved to make herself happy as well.

Pinkie Pie: Dear Princess Celestia,
There are many different kinds of friends, and many ways to express friendship. Some friends like to run and laugh and play together. But others just like to be left alone, and that's fine too. But the best thing about friendship is being able to make your friends smile.

The issue, relatively, is that she's still ignorant to a large number of things and struggles to understand how to make people happy in ways that don't involve partying, pranks and other extroverted activities.

And that's Pinkie for the most part, from what I've noticed, anyway. :twilightsheepish:

I forgot to put this up before falling asleep. :facehoof:

Awesome! I've never looked at Pinkie Pie's Pinkie Sense in that way before.

[8:13:38 PM] Ineffable Cupidity: I just want feedback...

You got it, sister~

I think you have a solid point. However, I think there is something to Pinkie that no one can even comprehend... according to your blog, you say that Pinkie's memory is great and her intelligence can match that of Twilight's. While I agree that Pinkie has a quite impressive memory, I don't think that Pinkie has an intelligence matching that of Twilight's.

Twilight: The square root of 546 is 23.36664289109.
Professor: She is correct!

This quote here, pulled from The Crystal Empire part 1 during The Failure Song, shows Twilight's quite impressive intelligence and memory. As you stated, though, Pinkie's ability to whimsically make a song on the spot and to have the memory capacity to be able to know everything about the ponies in Ponyville definitely proves that her memory can definitely match or even top that of Twilight's. With that being said, however, keeping in mind that Twilight studies in her free time and Pinkie throws parties in her free time, I don't think that the intelligence of the party pony could even come close to that of Twilight Sparkle. But don't get me wrong, Pinkie is incredibly intelligent, but her way of going about things makes it so she couldn't have the intelligence of one that literally studies all day...

That's just my view on it~

1480372

I already covered that Pinkie has poor education, her potential however, is different. She's very intelligent, she just doesn't utilize it for the most part outside of her interests.

1480406 Exactly. If Pinkie had the same interests as Twilight did, there is no doubt in my mind that she would be more intelligent than Twilight...

1480413

Don't you mean more educated?

1480435 Actually, I don't... Even if she had the same interests as Twilight's, her personality wouldn't change. She would still be that whimsical singing friend making pony we all know and love, but she would have enough intelligence to solve pretty much anything, just like Twilight, but that incredible memory capacity that Pinkie has would make her capable of remembering things for a substantial amount of time, including things from early childhood, which, with her kind of memory, she could tell with excruciating detail. With her memory and the added intelligence of the studying she would do with the same interests as Twilight, plus the fact that she pretty much memorized every single detail of her friends and every other pony in Ponyville, her mind would be an absolute powerhouse, one that would with no doubt top the power that is Twilight's mind. Her only flaws would be her completely random stature and the fact that she has the attention span of a brick...

1480490 I do. It makes a lot of sense being an augmentation of Pinkie's natural, innate Earth Pony magic.
