Also, that bathroom is more reminiscent of Silent Hill than Ponyville.

I'd chalk the chitin up to artistic license. As for the state of the bathroom, Spike's really let himself go without Twilight's OCD to keep him in line.

I conceived to show Twilight`s psychological condition in this moment. For her all of this is one big Silent Hill.

I ask to forgive me a liberty with chitin. I wanted to underline Twilights nature, to add additional elements in appearance of the character. Besides warm colour of chitin and wings have done some inrichement to a picture.

Indeed. The composition would have been a bit cold in appearance without the chitin's color, but wouldn't that fit the feeling of the situation?
