What is this madness?! · 9:20pm Sep 30th, 2013
I have been hearing A LOT of talk about this government shut down thing. I do not know what the Republicans are willing to go through to get this in effect but I hope Obama stops it.
It's one thing to create/throw already-established characters in a story of some kind. It's another thing to develop those characters, regardless of the situation they're in.

wait what?
1386301 Like I said: whatever it is I hope Obama shuts it down. Don't look at me, I am only going by what I heard.
The Republicans were the one's trying to save the government but the Democrats shot down their only plan for getting money without printing. And they didn't agree with the plan because to make it successful obamacare would have to be gotten rid of.
Therefore, the Democrats directly forced the government into its current, partially lame state. Whereas, the Republicans would've saved the government without printing more (cash) bills, and gotten rid of an act that directly goes against the constitution.
That is all. Equestria is ours.

The government shutdown is the result of what's called "discretionary spending" not being provided for, since Congress couldn't pass a budget. Discretionary spending has to be approved with each new budget. No new budget, no discretionary spending.
So a lot of government programs that rely on discretionary funding have been shut down until Congress passes a budget or what's called a "continuing resolution," which would fund them at their usual level.
Either party could have compromised to pass a budget. The Republican-controlled House of Representatives could have proposed a budget that the Democrats would have been willing to pass. The Democrats could have sucked it up and delayed Obamacare for a year in order to prevent the shutdown.
The showdown over the budget is basically a game of chicken where each party is convinced that they still win if they crash.

Obama can't do anything about it. It's how the American system works: the legislature works against the executive and the executive works against the legislature. Through checks and balances, the branches fight and prevent each other from taking control of the country. It was designed to prevent the possibility of a tyrant uprising.
The Founders must be so proud. Hey, the system works...
Also, don't be so worried. This isn't the first time the government "shut down". It's just the first time in seventeen years. America'll survive.
On the bright side, gas prices in Canada are down because of all this

You know what's funny? We spent more time in my POLI101 tutorial discussing the States' current predicament than we did about our own government. I study in Canada by the way.
1392989 Damn.

Was raised in the US though so I know way more about American politics than most Americans. And from what my prof says, I now know more about Canadian politics than most Canadians. Still have no idea who's our current Prime Minister though...
