So, I'm working on a fan fic right now! YAY!
By working on it, I mean I haven't touched it since the end of January. BOO!
It's going to be a fan fic about the rise and fall of our favorite chimera, Discord. Specifically, how he came into power, what he did when he was in power, what his intentions were (e.g.: Did he really go out of his way to make everypony suffer, was that an unintended side effect of his fun, or did he just want to have some fun spreading chaos and didn't care who got in the way?), Celestia and Luna's motivations, what actually sparked the jealousy of Luna, and how Discord was defeated. I'm hoping to follow it up with a sequel about reuniting Equestria (which had split into several different factions after Discord's defeat, each faction having their own desires and trying to pick up the pieces of Discord's reign and defeat) under the two alicorns as well as covering the banishment of Luna/Night Mare Moon.
I'm going to restart it all from scratch, because the original direction I wanted it to go isn't working out very well and it's left me with very little to work with.
My original plan was to have a chapter or two about a war between the Draconequuses (Draconequi?) and the united ponies of Equestria, under the rule of the well-meaning but sometimes ill-tempered father of Celestia and Luna. It would have talked about a final assault put on by Celestia and Luna's late brother in the Northern Mountains (where the chimeras were gathering for an attack). After that, things are kind of uncertain because it wasn't written out well, but it probably would have been the Prince sending out a scout who is captured and corrupted by the chimeras, revealing where the prince's camp is. The camp barely survives, and the Prince goes in and kills the King of the Draconequu... chimeras, who happens to be Discord's father. Discord goes and corrupts the Prince, revealing a way around the protection of the Elements of Harmony. He slips in, kills the king ninja-style, and takes over Equestria.
It was going to explain that Discord was a very young Draconequus, so his powers could only generate things of amusement, rather than things that could physically harm or kill like others of his species could create. Then something about him ruling, scattering the Elements, Celestia and Luna being drawn to their power, wielding them, turning him into stone, yada yada.
Basically, it was extremely poorly written and wasn't working out at all, plus Hearts and Hooves Day briefly mentioned the Love Poison distracting royalty from doing their duties and putting Chaos in power (OMG DISCORD REFERENCE !!!!!!11111!!1!!!!!!!), so the idea is being thrown out aside from a few bits and pieces and being rewritten entirely. I plan to have it finished by the end of August, though hopefully sooner. Work is on hold right now because the AP US History test that I'm taking is in a couple of weeks, so I'm going to have less and less time to work on stuff as that time is occupied by large amounts of tedious studying.

So is Discord's race not all as powerful as he is (or will be)?
I'm planning on him being kind of inexperienced in his powers. I'd like to explain that by using a former idea of mine from the whole 'War' idea. Basically, there's an ambush of Draconequus...es... and they start using the environment around them (e.g.: turning the mountains into living things to swallow up the ponies, raining fire from the sky, generating living plants, etc.), as opposed to Discord, who creates chaos not for fear, but rather for amusement (chocolate milk rain, popcorn, turning roads into soap, all that stuff that you saw in TRoH, basically). The whole idea would be that Discord is a younger Draconequus and so his powers are less developed, so he can't really do as much as the other chimeras.
