It was a beautiful day in Ponyville, and the sun shone brightly as it beamed through the library's windows onto the busy ponies inside. Twilight Sparkle finished reading her scroll. "Okay girls, that's it. Get ready to watch as I show you my new spell!"
Rainbow Dash applauded. "Go, Twilight! I can't wait to see these strange new worlds you've been talking about."
Rarity nodded. "Yes, indeed darling. The fashions of an alien place? The ideas I'll find!"
"Shhh!" Twilight glared at them. "Remember, it's going to take all my concentration to do this right, so no interruptions." Closing her eyes, she held the spell's structure in her mind, gathering her magic. Soon her horn began to glow, brighter and brighter until small sparks danced at the edges. Rainbow Dash scuffed her hoof against the floor.
"Rainbow you-" Twilight's control fell apart. The steady glow flared into a wild light, flaring and flickering, throwing strange shadows onto the ponies' faces. Bolts of strange energies shot out from the tip, striking the floor.
The light built to a climax, then faded. "Oh bother." Twilight shook her head. "I'll have to try again later."
Rainbow Dash shot up into the air. "What, that was it? No big glowy explosion? No spooky portals sending us to alien worlds, or pulling strange creatures here?"
"What? Why would that happen?" Twilight blinked in befuddlement at her. "Would I be Celestia's favorite student if I didn't take basic safety precautions before magical experimentation? See, right here!" She floated over a checklist.
Rarity took a look. "Hmm, very thorough. Body swapping? Possession? Are those common concerns in your line of work, Twilight?"
"Not if you know what you're doing! Or at the least, checked the spell with your mentor first," Twilight said as she finished cleaning up her spell equipment.
Rainbow Dash's eyes grew big as she scrolled down the list. "Mutation! We could have become monster ponies. Or zombies!" She took a play bite at Rarity, who resolutely ignored her.
"Please! Do you think I would have invited you along if it had been truly dangerous? You're my friends, I wouldn't place you in peril. Now let's go get lunch. Some hay fries sound great about now."
"Sounds great - race you there!" Rainbow Dash buzzed out the door, while Rarity and Twilight followed at a more pleasant pace, chatting about another pleasant day in Ponyville.

I will admit that my first ponyfic involved Twilight Sparkle casting a new spell that brought something unexpected to Ponyville.
In my defense, it was a deliberately untrustworthy spell from a malicious source, but I'm still mocking myself in this.
