Music Reviews Pt. 1-Periphery, Marissa Nadler, St. Vincent

Hey guys and gals, trying something new here... people who might have been following me for a bit know I'm a big music nut. I like listening to, playing it, talking about it, and even writing about it. And since my fic-writing is going super-super slow, I was looking for a way to flex those writerly muscles while I wait for my muses to wake the hell up. So, I'm going to try to post reviews of

    R.I.P. Oderus Urungus

For any of you who like me, are metal fans, and also with a taste for extremely juvenile humor, this is going to be sad news.

On Sunday, Dave Brockie, also known as Oderus Urungus, founder and lead vocalist for the legendary Shock Metal band GWAR was found dead in his home in Richmond, VA. Cause at this time is not known.

The Doktor's Best Albums of 2013 List (Because You Should Care About This.)

Yep, it's that time again... you see, I have this crazy fantasy of being a music journalist in my head, and I'm totally obsessed with best-of lists, so I'm going to take advantage of my little pulpit here and share my thoughts on the year in music with the... (does quick count) Four? of you that care. Besides, if I can get just one of you to listen to a Gorguts record, then I've made the world

Pacific Rim was out-grossed at the box office by The Grown-Ups 2.

This more or less sums up my feelings.

It didn't lose to Grown-Ups. It lost to Despicable Me. Grown-Ups just caught the fratboy demo, that wasn't gonna go see either movie anyway.

And can you blame it for losing to Despicable Me? I hear the first one was awesome.

I haven't seen either of the Despicable Me's but I hear they're pretty decent. And there's no shame in losing to those (family movie, proven franchise.) Finishing behind Grown-Ups 2 on opening is depressing, though. Poor Guillermo Del Toro can't catch a break.

1215535 He's not mainstream. Also there aren't any names in the film that I can recall. So they're riding on giant robots and monsters. It's niche.

I know Pan's Labyrinth was amazing. YOU know Pan's Labyrinth is amazing. Your average person says "ewwww, subtitles!"

I should know. I sold that film back when I was at Circuit City and everyone kept asking for the English version that didn't exist.

Yeah, and also, there's no romantic plot. Still, it's a shame. If the world were a just place GDT would own the box-office, (And would have gotten his adaption of At The Mountains of Madness made.) But then also, Nathan Fillion would be a bankable leading man, Farscape and Firefly and all the other shows TV I liked wouldn't have been cancelled, dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria, etc.

1215556 Firefly being cancelled is just because Fox can't market to save their lives anyway.

It is a shame. I hear Despicable Me 2 got good reviews, but ending up behind Grown-Ups 2?

I mean, sure; Pacific Rim had some heavy cliches and I forgot the main character's name immediately, but it was really fun to watch. And Grown-Ups 2 is... well, it should suffice to say that it scored 6% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Seriously. Come on.

Yes. Hopefully at least Red 2 might put that lame dog down this weekend. At least my sense of nerd-justice hopes so. I really liked the first one more than I expected to... Helen Mirren being the most unlikely badass ever was great. Helps that I'm a huge Warren Ellis fanboy too.
