For any of you who like me, are metal fans, and also with a taste for extremely juvenile humor, this is going to be sad news.
On Sunday, Dave Brockie, also known as Oderus Urungus, founder and lead vocalist for the legendary Shock Metal band GWAR was found dead in his home in Richmond, VA. Cause at this time is not known.
GWAR and their music are, even for Metal, not for everyone. Crude, disgusting, puerile, offensive, obscene, vulgar... yes, I know all those words are redundant, believe me, it's appropriate for them... also, I happen to think, a lot of fun.
I'm sure a lot of people never 'got' GWAR because of the extremely ridiculous stage costumes they were known for (other places explain the whole 'mythos' better than I can, but they were supposed to be world-conquering aliens.) But their music, while not sophisticated, could be very very catchy. Also, this is a band that is sure to piss your parents off if you're a teenager and you're caught listening to them. Also, those who've seen their live show can testify that it was the stuff of legend. Also years ago they put out a long form video called Phallus in Wonderland which is even more vulgar than the title makes it sound. And somehow, they were nominated for a Grammy for it.
In addition to his work with the band, Brockie has had many appearances on television (both in-character and out) and has written for a variety of websites on topics ranging from Football (the American kind) to WWII history. In addition, he's fought for free speech rights (in relation to an obscenity case stemming from the legendary live show mentioned above.)
This feels like a part of my adolescence is gone. A twisted, slimy, cherished piece of my adolescence. Rest in Peace, Dave. \m/
Sad whale, baby...
