Light Rant and terrible names · 10:31pm Jul 9th, 2013
This is me when seeing ponified city names.
Listen. Manehattan and Baltimare worked. Hoofinton, Trottingham and Vanhoover are flawless. Applelosa sounded like a legit normal city name.
Most of the official names given to us worked so far. Okay, Fillydelphia is a bit silly.
But when I see someone here drop awful shit like Neighpon, Neighagaragua, Neighzakistan, Caneighda, Amareica, Fleece, etc.; I just can't.
A lot of us are authors, and while I'm completely aware that in the end of the day a name is made by what is behind it, this shouldn't be excuse to be so infuriatingly lazy for names in my opinion.
You want poni China? Do some research and name it something chinese.
You want poniponi Germany? I'll knock your teeth in if you say Germaneigh. I'm dead serious.
You want poni Japan? Do some fucking research and call it something japanese.
Uma is horse. It's not that far away from us.
Same thing happens when I see stupid pony names that sound more like Transformer names than anything.
I've lost the count for how many times I've seen Bludshot(no, really), Something Steel, Steel Something, Sword Whatever or anything with Blood, Blades, Kill, etc, etc.
These are magical, prancing fucking ponies people. If I were to drink this shit would send me to a hospital, I swear.
And it's not even that difficult to avoid.
Some rushed examples:
Holly. Bam! Knight templar mare from a silly name pun based on a flower.
Sunshine Smiles. That night guard dude from that one webcomic.
Jesus people, don't delude yourselves.
Harsher themes are cool and all but have some conscience of what you are writing with.
On another note.
I just discovered one of the greatest anime franchises to be ever made in Pretty Cure.
The characters are great, the writing is noticeably good for a children's cartoon and it has the best fights this side of Dragon Ball Z.
Best thing is that, the quality of the show keeps up in the movies unlike Dragon Ball.
Last movie I saw was Yes! Precure 5 Bizarre Journey into the Mirror Kingdom. I think that was the name, idunno.
And I nearly cried towards the end.
R.I.P in peace sweet princess.
Never forget.
And the name mexicolt sort of work. Then again i don't know how a canon mlp would work if they used a japanese pony.
1200503
I think that Longmas and Qirins would work.
If you read between the lines, unlike tumblr and nigger sparkle humanized authors, ponies are the saxons.
1200579 oh. And who is nigger sparkle?
1200585
Basically, this abomination.

1200614 And why is twilight black? Even though i'm black,it still looks like shit.
1200620
Get this.
Because her coat is darker.
That's all.
That's everything they have for a reason. By that logic Zecora would have vitiligo.
1200631 imagine that. And usually when i see a humanized twilight, she looks anime-ish.
Ha! I named Poland Kucykland, because kucyk is poni in polish!
I beat you to it!
Also:
Dumbass. RIP means rest in peace. To say RIP in peace is to be redundant as fuck. I also agree with the name bit.
1201024
Genius!
How many /mlp/s have you done today?
Step it up, senpai.
1201029
Pffft...
I still want that divorce.
1202035
Hmph! I was promised to ScopeEva anyways.
What about Stableholm? Can I get away with Stableholm syndrome?
huehuehue.
Is that Ippo doing the dempsey roll?
I think I just came from the thread that inspired this rant. Neighpon also gave me a feel of wanting to throw up though my suggestion was hardly any better. Koumasaki was my lame attempt

Headstockholm lel
Yours actually cool.
1232958
You're overthinking details on a fiction site.
You're doing good,
Actually Nippon is the name for Japan. And Neighpon isn't that far off.
Where I've seen Germany used most of the fics I remember seeing the name used was Germaney. Which is phonetically almost the same.
As for Mexicolt I've seen a lot. In A Parting Gift From Discord the author uses Marexico, and I about rage ranted on that chapter, but I was able to ignore it. But for the most part I agree. Most people need to put some thought and common sense into their naming of cities.
As for naming ponies. I'm fortunate enough to have rarely run into Blood, or Blade in a name. As in Bloodwing in the story Project Ascension, and I know I saw Blade somewhere but I can't remember where.
I just thought I'd point out the Neighpon one.
Also Las-Pegasus isn't a bad name imo. It has a certain flow to it.
1259593
I'm well aware of that, though.
Thing is that both Germaneigh and Neighpon are lazy.
Las Pegasus does sounds cool 'nuff but it's difficult to use as a reference. Is it Las Vegas or Los Angeles? One letter will tell.
I haven't run into too many bloods or irons/steels but the fact that they exist bothers me.
1259843
Well Vanhoover and Fillydelphia are lazy in away. Neighpon personally is accurate enough to the actual name of Japan, while being obscure enough to be original [not to mention used in almost every fic where Pony Japan exists]. So I guess it's one of those things that has become part of the collective conscious of pony places.
I swear if I ever read Germaneigh in an actual fic I will rant while crying tears of acidic blood. I don't know how I'll put off, but just reading that pisses me off more than the Neighgas ref in Nightmare Night and Nyx. I love the story but the Niagara Falls ref I automatically suppressed, and I'm happy repressing what was actually written. But the Vegas as Neighgas made me rage shudder before going in how horrible of a name that was. Seriously who the hell uses Neighgas !
As for could go either way. As for how I know it's Las Vegas [This fic [Mature Rating] Super awesome fic. Book 4 out of 5 so far.. That plus Holly Wood is in Los Angelas, and in the Canon Map Hollywood is Apple Wood.
But I agree that some degree of originality is important. But It defeats the purpose of a good pun. Which is being original enough to grab the attention, but simple enough that it makes sense to the reader.
Yes Uma is good, but it's too obscure with a site dedicated to english readers. Although if a person wanted to go the extra distance on a good Japanese Pun Cities Here's a list of Japanese Horse Breeds, and Japanese Cities and Prefectures.
And I can understand your rant. Trust me there is nothing more atrocious to a good story than a horrible, brain hurting pun. Like the Germany one you put above [like Germaney better] yes some can be hard to do. But seriously I hate when an author can't find a city in another fic, or on the Canon Map and makes something up. And they do it by forcing Neigh, Mare, Mane, or Colt into it. If it really comes down to it. What Nom_DeChavel did and remake the city name. Keep part of it, but add in enough detail so that the reader can know what you're talking about.
Sorry started to really get into this conversation a bit much . I kind of get that way when I get in rant mode .

I know that using actual japanese might be going too far but I still think that it's better than Neighpon.
Hell, just saying Pony Japan or Pony Germany is better than anything with a shoehorned neigh.
1260460
I still stick to the Nippon ponification. Only do to slight phonetic simularities makes it viable.
But yeah. Alot of places should never have Neigh in it. Ever. So Pony Germany would be slightly better than that. But if [since Equestria uses English phenotypes] an English used horse based theme can be thrown in, and it flows properly. Without totally corrupting the name. I say go for it. But it's something that should be done with care. After all nothing ruins a good story like a bad pun. And shoe horning any horse based theme is a horrible, horrible crime against literature. After all puns are the lowest form of humor, and bad puns are unforgivable.
Kind of like how people shoe horn Apple Jack Daniels. When Apple Jacking is used for hard cider, not whisky. Which is why in my fics I use Apple Shine. or Apple Shine premium malt. It's original and if memory serves me there is a pony named Apple Shine. So it works better.
Wait, what? This has appeared in a story here?
1260460 I've seen "Germaney".
1322176
I haven't seen it. Yet.
That's the point of the rant, I can't discard that someone will think that's a good name.
Now, some will argue that it's pointless to think of good names for the locations and just get into the story, but they already have the rest of everything else done.
They have the races, the main locations, the heroes and icons done, that's like half of the work already done.
There's no excuse for crappy names.
About the names thing, I named a general in one of my stories Crimson Fields, which is a pun in itself. I don't think that's a bad one. I usually don't mind names too much unless I've heard the same or similar ones from a hundred different authors (excluding canon characters of course), then I would be a little concerned.
Silver out!

I guess that kind of thing is to be expected of war fics, given that ponies choose the better suited ponies out of them to take on the charges they need.
Violenty names sound off to me, you know, like war is not on ponies' nature.
1339669
I see what you mean, and I understand why you'd be bothered by it. Ponies with a soldier's name belongs in war fics and is a bit out of place anywhere else.
I agree.
Silver out!
