Background ponies are ponies that appear in the background and possess character models that are used frequently to fill out crowd scenes and incidental characters in the show. In late April 2013, The Hub's Facebook page and Twitter account referred to Trixie, Princess Luna, Daring-Do, DJ Pon-3, Spitfire, Princess Twilight, Queen Chrysalis, and Zecora as background ponies.

At least Hasbro put Luna where she belongs.

Odd that twilight is considered a background character when rarity had the smallest part in the season
maybe she's only temp princess, and season four opener she messes up and gets turned back to a unicorn.
Who cares, really.
As long as she isn't featured in the fics that I occasionaly read and more-than-often unfollow, she can turn into a planet and go on a journey of exploration and friendship.

Twilight clinically died when they cast the Princess-ing spell.
The "Princess" body we're seeing is actually a projection of her unshackled consciousness, which Celestia quickly bolstered and gave form to so that it wouldn't be lost while her real body is being healed.
Since it isn't an actual "body", it was malleable enough to pass through the portal into the human world safely, but only long enough to get her mission done.
But Twilight woke up, and Princess Twilight is still there, and both of them are perfectly fine. Now what?
Well, if you're the main characters you'll ignore Princess Twilight as though she were never there, and shove her into the background.
And if you're Princess Twilight, you'll grow more and more frustrated by the day.
And then it will just be a matter of time.
