    Knowing Nothing, and Starting Over

For the past year and a half, I have been attempting to learn Chess. I started out at 100 ELO, which is to say I started out at the very bottom. I couldn't beat anybody for the first few weeks, and before this, I had never won against anyone in my life, not even a computer. After I finally understood enough to know how to win, I started winning one game out of every five.

Fighting To Write, So Far Victorious

I had not posted anything since the year started, but this does not mean that I have not been writing. Indeed, I had taken bookplayer's and First_Down's advice and looking at Jim Butcher's blogs, and attempting to stick with one of his recommendations: write. The only way that I am going to improve is to write.

I'm going to be trying something a bit different this week · 2:10am May 26th, 2013

I’ve read quite a few short stories, and I’ve never really sat down and read a long story. The longest fimfic I’ve ever read is Apotheosis by Daetrin, and that’s only around 45,000 words. I’ve tried to read some of the longer works, but before recently, I didn’t have enough resolve to see them through.

It wasn’t until reading a blog about longer stories that I decided to finally sit down and push myself through a longer story. So I went on FimFiction.Net, used the search bar to pick a story with specific characteristics, sort it by word count, and pick the one on top. From May 20th to May 23rd, I've been reading this story, and I’d like to share my experience with you.

This thing I'm working on will be a review and critique of the story, where I will be talking about various aspects of it. Unlike my Slice-of-Life reviews, I’ll be including criticisms on this particular story. It won’t be as much of an enticement to read it as it is a reviewing of it.

It’ll be the longest review I've ever done (where half of it was quotes), and the title will be “For Those That Want Adventure: A Review of *insert author’s name here*’s “*insert title of story here*””. If you see that, it’s this thing I’m working on.

Expect it in a few days, if you’re interested in reading it.

No teaser or anything? :raritydespair:

I'm going to guess the story is either The Immortal Game by AestheticB, Lost and Found by Cloudy Skies, or Last of the Dragonlords by Fluttershy20 in order from most likely to least likely.

1105047 Interesting guess. :trixieshiftright: I'm working on it at this moment.

And no, no teaser. What I'm working on is most likely a rough draft that I'll need to work on later, so I don't want to reveal anything rough.

I'm interested n_n There are some truly incredible long fics out there and I think it could be really cool to see how you who tend to stick to shortfics handle a longer piece.

1105708 I'll be extra careful with this one. Csquared08's blog said that longfics CANNOT be judged on shortfic standards, so I'm being fairly cautious with this one.

Also, it's been a while, hasn't it? How've you been getting along?

1105715 *nods* that's the hard thing to adjust to I think is that you have to compare them differently.

Not too badly overall, busy and happy, hopefully you're the same?

1106291 Busy wrapping up school and getting ready for summer (where I will not be taking classes). I finished Big Siblings, and I've been doing a few Slice-of-Life reviews. Overall, busy and happy as well.
