World Building · 1:11am Apr 26th, 2013
Perhaps the most fun I've had with writing since I discovered shipping (now THAT is another story). World building is such a thrill, because you have no freakin' clue whether you're smothering your readers with info, having just the right amount, or forgetting something crucial that would be stupid to mention later on. It's like having a pitch black expanse in front of you, and you have to step forward, no idea whether you'll fall or not. Usually I freak out over playing in the black expanse of writing, and trust me I still am, but there's this level of "fuck yeah" to it that, when in the right dose, is intoxicating.
I had big plans for Kinetics, but as I'm writing this fourth chapter, I'm wondering if "big" is an ample word. Perhaps "massive" is better? I'm following my notes and even still it's such a rush to see this little seed of an idea bloat and expand in front of my eyes. Building this world from the ground up with layers of history, culture, politics, religion, economics, mythology, and dark secrets is fun.
Anywho, decided to take a quick break from chipping away at the mammoth fourth chapter to let y'all know I'm still alive and kickin' after a hectic set of deadlines for school and whatnot.
P.S. Literally, I was just writing two minutes ago. Now I'm on a wikipedia-tab-filled browser, overloaded with queries to see if my research matches up.
P.P.P.S. I should really stop drinking tea late at night while listening to dance music. It's messing with me badly and I'm jittery over nothing.
Don't stop now!
World building can be an interesting combination of scary, frustrating, thrilling, and intoxicating all at the same time. That is why I love writing fiction based on the MLP world. The writers have given us enough of a framework to keep us limited, but at the same time left us so much to play with, examine, and really think about.

Precisely! I needed a whole Alternate Universe to get my plans to work, but in a general sense I'm still restricted to the show's parameters. It's fun, because then you have to take your big ideas and fit them within a pony form. A challenge that I simply can't say no to.

Hahaha! Exactly, mate, exactly. I may or may not be drinking caffeine now too... >.>
