Character Profile: Time Turner · 3:10am Mar 2nd, 2013
Alright, in preparation of the continuing of my first fic "Magic Wands and Hourglasses", I've decided to do a series of character profiles to try and flesh out my ideas more before actually writing with them. I decided to share them with you, although of course not everything that I know about the characters are here. Gotta keep some surprises after all ;). And we're going to start with our good friend and star, Time Turner:
Name: Time Turner
Age: Adult
Sex: Stallion
Species: Earth Pony
Place of Residence: Ponyville
Cutie Mark: An Hourglass
Abilities: Has an uncanny ability to perfectly arrange and schedule just about anything without a moment’s hesitation; as he says “it’s as if he’s perfectly in-tune with the nature of time itself.” Has used it for a wide variety of things, from setting up the train schedule for Ponyville to being able to predict how long it would take for an explosive charge to go off while chatting with a Changeling.
Occupation: Schedule manager for Ponyville City Hall and is responsible for all things timey-wimey, but considers himself a part-time adventurer as well. Just about everyone else though thinks he takes way too many vacations.
Personality: Time Turner is, at his core, a very optimistic and idealistic pony. No matter what he tends to try and get through things with a smile on his face and sincerely believing that everything will be all right. In his mind, the world is an absolutely fantastic place, filled with all sorts of exciting creatures to meet, places to see, and sometimes foods to try. Even when faced with trouble and hardship, he does his best to keep chipper, though at times even he’ll admit it’s more for the sake of his friends than for himself. For many, this excitement and optimism may come off as him just being a bit ditzy, obnoxiously talkative, or naive. To which Time Turner usually agrees and just simply wonders what the problem with that is?
For his idealism, Time Turner believes that every pony has some kind of inherent worth to them and tends to get quite depressed when he sees a pony that is wasting their potential. In most cases he won’t intervene as sometimes the reasons are due to the free choice of the pony involved. As much as he might dislike it, he does try and respect their choices. But when he sees a pony who has been knocked down and going through struggles, well, he might drag them along for a vacation or two in hopes of cheering them up and renewing their spirits. And if along the way they run into some danger that helps the pony truly realize what they are capable of, well, all the better.
He also has a strong sense of justice to go alongside that idealism. Wanting everypony to be able to live happily and fulfill their destiny, he tends to get a little miffed when something or someone is threatening that ideal. When that happens, while he will of course offer to help if possible because in his views even ‘the bad ponies’ deserve a second chance, he can get quite serious about trying to stop them. At times, however, Time Turner is willing to admit his moral outrage can get out of hoof, and has some regrets about when he decided to intervene. When this happens, though, he’s fully willing to take responsibility.
Character History:
Time Turner moved into Ponyville at a young age, living with his relatives who were responsible for running a clock shop. He was a very shy foal when he first started to attend Ponyville’s school; he rarely talked, seemed rather gloomy, and wouldn't even tell the other’s how he got his cutie mark (leaving them to assume he had gotten it due to working in said clock shop). Soon most ponies began to just leave him alone, except for a pony by the name of Minuette. Over time the young Time Turner began to open up to the rather stubborn headed pony, eventually developing into an actual friendship that soon expanded to include some of Minuette’s friends such as Derpy Hooves and Pretty Mare
As time went on and they all grew up, Time Turner stayed in Ponyville. Minuette went to study in Canterlot while Pretty Mare successfully ran for Mayor and adopted the name Mayor Mare. Derpy became a mailmare. Time Turner also attempted a brief period of time studying in Canterlot. Finding academia boring, however, he simply drifted a bit before eventually returning to Ponyville. With nothing else to do, Time Turner joined Mayor Mare in her campaign, serving primarily in the role of her timekeeper and scheduler before becoming Ponyville’s official timekeeper upon her winning election. Minuette eventually returned to Ponyville and joined her friends in public service, becoming a town historian while using her connections from her life in Canterlot to become a sort of liaison between Canterlot and Ponyville as well.
Overall, life has been good for Time Turner, but things have begun to change recently. For reasons he doesn't quite understand or wish to discuss, he seems to have become the object of ire of the fast-rising Canterlotian Clock Keeper. Still, he refuses to let that keep him down, and continues to try and enjoy his friends and his adventures the best he can.
The most recent of his adventures involved him meeting the Great and Powerful Trixie, which can be read about in the fic Magic Wands and Hourglasses.
I love how you've made him a Doctor analogue without going the easy route and making him from "Gallopfrey" or hinting he's actually a Time Lord or something. You've got a great imagination friend!
879676 Well, I do have a bit more to his backstory than what is here, but yes, at no point is he actually going to be a Time Lord or from "Gallopfrey" or anything like that XD. But my plans do involve the time vortex popping up, but that's all I'm going to say

879751 Oh, no, none of the actual Doctors are going to show up either. My plans for the time vortex are going to be self-contained to the MLP universe.
Just making a quick note of an edit; I thought of a slightly more "solid" job for Minuette and figured I'd go ahead and make the edit here before going on to her character template in my next blog post.
I'm a little tipsy so Minuette = Romana/Fred?
